78 300D Idle Adjustment

I have a Haynes manual, it describes the idle adjustment procedure as disconnecting the linkage at the ball joint that goes to the front of the engine, making the idle adjustment, and then replacing the linkage. Does that linkage control the idle in any way?
I adjusted the linkage that runs down the passenger side of the engine to fix a shift point issue, but I would like to do a complete check of the linkage adjustments starting from square 1. The manual describes adjusting certain items but not a global adjustment procedure.

You should get all your linkages adjusted to the properly length, but you should use the FSM for the specs.

There is an idle adjust on the injection pump. Toward the rear of the pump between the pump and the block there is a long cylinder with a flat head slot at the top and a nut at the base. You loosen the nut then turn the flat head screw in or out to adjust the idle RPM.

How do you loosen the lock nut? I've tried all kinds of crows feet, wrenches, I even cut back a crows foot trying to get on it to turn. I can't get it loose......It always seems I don't have the clearence to turn it.

I usually use a deep socket. It just barely grabs the nut, but it works, atleast is always has for me.

I made a wrench by cutting the box end off of a 14mm wrench and welding a rod to it that sticks straight up and has a bend for turning. I had to grind down the thickness of the box end to clear the side of the IP. I used the box end from one of my custom valve adjusting wrenches that I had bent up.

I will post a pic, but right now the car is buried in snow, and probably will be for a while.
