Somebody tell me how screwed up my trans is. It seems to slip quite a bit in the cold

87TD. So whenever the temperature drops below 25f or so my transmission starts acting weird in the morning. Anything more than a little bit of throttle makes the RPMs spike way high. After a minute or so that stops happening, but for a good five minutes the rpm seems higher than usual (like 2600 at 45mph). Afterwards everything is "normal" (as normal as a VCV-less tranny can be heh), but absolutely no slipping til the next morning.

So I'm wondering if its going out or if I used the wrong fluid or something (I think I used this mcparts stuff last time http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_DEXRON-MERCON-ATF-Coastal_8150027-P_N3291A_T|GRP2071____ )

Not sure where you live, but its my impression that this is pretty typical from a used MB trans.

Using a fluid that can retain a more stable viscosity over a wider temp range could help, but I think your clutch pack seals are a little old to be working flawlessly.

ps.. get a vcv, doesn't your transmission deserve better?

Vacuum leaks, and working VCV are a must.

Honestly, in my limited experience, the vacuum amp (Blue flying saucer) has proven to me worth the trouble.

Also, IMHO use nothing but the best full syn ATF you can find. I get BG Full Syn from my local Indie (he buys in bulk, and lets me buy from him) about $9/liter

worth every penney.. . don't forget to drain the torque converter too

Just sounds like the fluid may be low when it gets this cold, maybe try filling it more towards the full mark and not just the middle. My 300E slips a bit in the cold too until it gets warmed up, but only for the first minute or so
