glow plug relay, glow plug coil dash light

I have a 1983 300td. When I turn the ignition, the glow plug coil light on the dash light for less than 1 second. I pulled each glow plug today and they all worked properly.

I don't think the relay is staying on long enough for the glow plugs to glow red hot. I hear the relay clicking off shortly after the dash coil light goes out.

I'm located in MD and the temps are in the teens right now in the morning.
Is there anyway to adjust the relay so that it stays on longer?
Does the relay trigger the inside dash coil light to go on and off?

I've read that the relay may go off sooner depending on the temp but this is not occurring. The coil dash light is going off as if it were a 100 degree summer day.

Any idea?

Thx
pete

Did you apply power to each GP and they all glowed?

First check the fuse on the relay for a good connection. If that's good sounds like you need a new relay.

Each glow glow plug worked when I applied power.
I guess it must be the relay.

With a working normal Glow PLug Relay the Glow Plug Relay will stay on even after the Glow Plug Light goes out for about 20 more seconds. So on those cold days once the Glow Plug Light goes out just leave the key in the preglow position until you hear the Glow Plug Relay click off and attempt to start.

The glow plug relay clicks about 5 seconds after turning the key on. If it's supposed to be 20 seconds than I think the problem may be the relay.

I timed the relay today from on to off and it was 2 seconds.
I'm heading to the junkyard to find a 300d relay.

Turns out it was the relay.
The new junkyard relay works perfectly.
