with your history of cars owned it seems that you know the potential issues with an sd.its not mileage only thats important, but what maintenance has been done.you need to provide more info-inorder to better get feedback.

Not nearly enough info.

The short answer is that any 25 year old car with 300k miles is going to need attention. Based on the price, I would guess that the owner hasn't put much money into it recently. What are you planning on doing with it?

Just realize that:
1: The seller is lying.
2: See #1.
3: It's a 30 year old car. Unless it comes with a stack of dealer receipts, it'll need some work that the owner doesn't know about, and therefore can't lie about.
4: Still lots of fun. Couldn't afford it if I didn't DIY.

Well I can't believe Wut this seller says cause he told me that the car is running good so when I went there to c it, the car wouldn't start and he told me that it might b the glow plug.
I just got a call from him that he saying the car running good it was only 3 glow plugs were bad.

Look for rust and leaks. Obviously its been sitting. The engines will take a ton of abuse but the bodies will not.

I would not rely on a $1,000 car to drive 50 miles per day if my job was my livelihood. Just my 2 cents.

I would probably want to have it gone over by a good Indy shop if you are not confident in your ability to check it out. There are quite a few potential issues that could cost more than the sale price at that age/mileage.

Very, very true. I've only had a handful of exceptions in my 20 benz purchases from individuals.

I have to disagree. These things are all over second and third-world countries, many of them in Northeastern Europe where salt is used in quantities that would make Chicago or Detroit look like Arizona, and the bodies hold up very well. Thick and quality paint, quality steel and fastners on the body, and extremely strong mounting points for shocks and other structural supports makes one hell of a durable body IMO.

If you have an electrical tester you can check the glow plugs the quick-n-dirty way by pulling the relay cap off and testing it on the plug itself. Another good indicator is the light on the dash, which will go out if just one plug has given up.

If the car runs well, drives well, has little blow by, and you can do some wrenching on it; I would have no worries about 300k on an older Benz.

Been there and done that, just make sure you have a good backup vehicle should the benz develop some issues. Recently had to transfer my good running OM617 (from a $1000 car) into another body/chassis due to rust. Inspect jack points and the trunk thoroughly.

You'll be hard pressed to find a rust free benz of that age anywhere there is salt and snow in the U.S. In many cases the car can sit for 5 years and start right up (given decent fluids) but in that same time all the rubber molding around the windows will deteriorate and create leaks, the drain holes will plug up with who knows what, and rust will develop around the jack points from constant moisture. Compared to some cars, perhaps the Benz is decent (think Japanese) but the body and vacuum are typically the weak points. I can't speak for other parts of the world as I haven't seen the markets there.
