How do I get this hood open? (83 300SD)

I can't figure out how to get the hood open on the 83 300SD that I just inherited from 81 WAGON. I pulled the primary latch under the dash, but I'm not finding the secondary release. Can somebody tell me how to open one of these, please? Thanks. I've advertised it and have had one person come and look at it already. (He didn't want a sedan, so it didn't matter) thanks.

Well there should be a little latch lever, (plastic) that pokes through the grill. If that has broken off, you will have to make some wire device to get a hold of it and pull it. Perhaps the fellow you inherited it from can tell you how. On the 300D's is not too difficult to make something to pull it open with. I would expect the 300SD has about the same device.

Well, since I really don't know the SD, I looked up this page on the Russian EPC

http://mb.ilcats.ru/part/class/1/ccode/F/cat/68P/type/126/subtype/120/group/88/subgr//vers//imgno/4

And now I see the assembly is the same as the 300D. See that triangular piece #29. Well just get a piece of clothes hanger, heavy wire, put a hook on the end and pull it open. that should open it if you cable assembly from inside the work is working to make the first release.

The 300SD with the 126 body has two release levers, one on each side of the grille. Press both towards the grill to release.

No, no, no, no, no.

The 300SD has a unique hood opening latch that is not shared by any other M-B vehicle as far as I know except maybe other w126s from that generation.

There is no plastic pull tab that comes through the grille.

There are TWO latches. One is on each side of the grille. The best way I can describe it is this. Start at the hood star. Go along the grille's top edge, proceeding out from the center, until you are at the edge of the "lip". Insert each index finger into the crack at each side of the TOP of the grille and press inwards. The two latches move towards each other; you press both towards the center and the hood opens.

Just for clarity, I'm not talking about down at the bottom of the grille where it meets the bumper. The latches are under the TOP edge, in parallel (almost) to the hood star, but hidden down under the grille and right at the edges.

Once you've found them once you can do it blindfolded.

Thanks very much fellas! I'm on my way out to see what's what. I know it can't hardly be like the pull strap deal like on my 300D, because there's no openings in the honeycomb grill for one to come through. I'll try gjgogel's idea. That would make sense, since there's not a hole where mine is.

Now that you got the hood open, we need pictures of your new car.
