W123 speedometer; 2-prong connector

What is the purpose of the 2 contact electrical connector on the back of the speedometer on a W123 instrument cluster? Is it associated with the cruise control function?

Asking because I notice that the 'male' connector which is an integral part of the assembly attached to the speedometer is broken and only one of the wires is still attached.

Is this 'module' replaceable without having to obtain a whole speedometer?

So is this speed sensor a simple remove & replace (leaving the speedometer installed in the cluster), or must the speedometer itself be swapped out, is there calibration required, etc?

I wouldn't bother with it. The cruise on these cars rarely works, and I read the FSM note that they barely worked right from the factory. I've never seen one that works, and usually if they do it's intermittent. I bet 95% of the 123s owned on this forum have cruise that doesn't work. The cruise amp under the dash is usually the problem though.

Its held on by a single screw.

Mine works perfectly, just like everything else that I bother to maintain. ;)

As Forced said, just transfer the male connector from the other unit.

I put 12 years and 200,000 miles on my cruise control unit. When it broke I spent $125 and got another 5 years and 75,000 miles before I sold the car. Never had a problem with it. I just took care of it. It worked well.
