Outside thermometer

How hard is it to replace an outside thermometer on a 1995 300e diesel. Also is the thermometer just for a 1995 300e or will thermometers from other models and makes fit and work. I think the sensor in the cluster is ok, but it is blank now. This past summer I got in the car and noticed the outside temp as being 136 degrees and it would vary some from that but not a whole lot. Then the sensor in the cluster went blank.
Thanks L L L

The sensor is behind the front license plate or the drivers side behind the bumper. The display is in the cluster. Jeremy 5848 recently posted an excellent tutorial on the workings of the outside temperature display/sensor. Look it up. It should help you determine which part has failed.

To replace the sensor and the entire wire would be rather difficult as it's wrapped in several different wire bundles as it travels from the sensor, under the license plate, up the driver's side fender, through the fuse box, and into the cabin. You can cut the sensor off, and wire in a replacement. If the display is blank I'd make sure it's getting power. Usually when they sensor goes bad or is disconnected the display will read to one extreme or the other, can't remember which. The sensors are the same across the years and models. The sensor itself looks a little different but they all work the same. Any of the 126 or 124 chassis sensors will work. I used to have a couple extra with just a little wire on them if you want one let me know. If I still have it's yours if you pay shipping. I'll look today to see if I can find one.

Andrew, why don`t you put the display in Flow? Deliveryvalve has a good DIY installing one in a W123.

There might also be some info helping Larrylarkin.

Already have! I did it before Richard put up his DIY, and before everyone else started doing it. I've been collecting displays and sensors out of the junkyards. But a couple of the sensor wire's I've collected came out of car that got crunched in the front end and I couldn't get the whole wire out, so I took what I got get out.

I've got at least one more display and sensor in my parts pile, and I used to have a few short sensor wires. If someone wants the display and sensor let me know.

I have been going to install one in the 85. have a couple of the wiring harnesses and several of the displays, from the 126, then when Richard found the 124 fit better, starting removing them too. Don`t know if any work, but I got em.

Yes the 124 display fit better. I've had both in Flo. Originally I had the 126 display. But later found a 124 display and put it in.

Larry, I just looked through my stuff. I've got several sensors. Let me know if you want one.

Biodiesel300td I would like for you to send me a sensor. Just let me know how you want
the money for the shipping or you can ship it collect. I will pay you for the part if you like! The best way to ship would be for you to get the money from me and then ship.
Can you estimate the shipping charge and I will send you the money if you tell me where to send it or whatever you want to do.
Thanks L L L
