girlfriend thinks im obsessive

am i obsessive about working on my car if after working all day i want to go and finish more work on my car ,even if its dark and cold outside?.is it obsessive to be constantly checking forum and reading more material about repair, looking at cl for cars, ordering parts and talking about mechanical matters?.i mean im not on a porn site, though sometimes the way members speak about their cars does have some similarity to admiring a women.this is a good healthy hobby, look at all the money im saving by not having a regular mechanic do the work on my old car .so what if i want to resurrect another diesel, arent i helping recyle precious materials?come on having hobbies is health -isnt it?

vstech 02-03-2011 12:46 PM

under 400 posts in nearly 3 years.
only 3 Mercedes?
talk to me when you are in double digits of cars, and have broken 5000 posts.

bah, you're nowhere NEAR obsessive...

thayer 02-03-2011 12:59 PM

I only have 2. and I am obsessive.

vstech 02-03-2011 01:01 PM

Because for people like you (and practically everyone here), working on the car is NOT work.

To me- cooking, gardening, and shopping are all WORK.

rosenfe 02-03-2011 01:19 PM

your right its not work to me -i enjoy being able to repair and keep my car going, its a sense of accomplishment.gardening is ok

punkinfair 02-03-2011 01:34 PM

buy her a benz - like a nice coupe or something - and your gf will think differently of your obsession.

Diesel911 02-03-2011 01:35 PM

Well remind your Girl Friend that She always knows where you are and that "Idle Hands (and I guess an idle mind) Are Tools Of The Devil".

Remind here of some of the other Male behaviors like substance abuse, womanizing, not coming home for several days, shoving a good portions of your income down G-strings at Strip Clubs, gambling and spending all of your free time with the "Boys" who would encourage you to do the aforementioned stuff.

Perhaps you are but it sounds like chicken soup. To clarify, I asked my neighbor John Henry if I could borrow his ax to which he replied "No".

I then asked why not & promised to take good care of the ax. He replied that the reason is because his wife is cooking chicken soup.

Next I queried what wife cooking chicken soup had to do with borrowing his ax.

His answer: "Nothing really, but when you don't want to do something, one excuse is as good as another."

Perhaps he should run for office. Congress uses the same reasoning.

Diesel911 02-03-2011 01:51 PM

I have read in a Psychology Book that in general Men tend to be more obsessive than Women.

I can remember when I worked with all Men the things they spoke of first was Sports followed by their Job, Cars if they were the types that worked on their Cars and 4th their Family/relationship.

When I worked in a Hospital and was around mostly Women the primary subject was their Family or other relationship, followed by a combination of Beauty aids and Apparel.

Notice that there is not much in common between the 2 groups.

.

Has he ever borrowed anything from you? Would you lend him anything after this incident?

bobodaclown 02-03-2011 02:25 PM

nahh, Not obsessive. Just informed. VS is obsessed.

cjlipps 02-03-2011 02:28 PM

An obsession is merely a hobby viewed from the perspective of someone that doesn't share the interest.
There are many unproductive "hobbies" mentioned above. Yours is productive so quit worrying about it. As long as you're not abusive to or neglectful of her because of your hobby she has nothing to complain about. Eventually she will get used to it or move on. In reality your intuitiveness and attention to detail are probably part of what attracts her to you in the first place.

junqueyardjim 02-03-2011 02:34 PM

Why isn't garbage like this moved to OD? Are the moderators asleep? BC wouldn't put up with a post like this, the OP.

rosenfe 02-03-2011 02:39 PM

we should put you in the grumpy old mans club .unless ur already there or too young

TX76513 02-03-2011 02:43 PM

Go the other way with the GF -(NOT THAT) Ask her to give you a hand on your next DIY. Don't rebuild a transmission but some light task. Wake up - she doesn't want to share you with the car(s). Now its up to you to get the best from both worlds.

glenlloyd 02-03-2011 02:46 PM

problem is that you're asking for confirmation of non-obsessive behavior by the very group that exhibits the same tendency so it's a little like false statistical confirmation. If the group your polling has anything to do with the poll then it's not random sampling...lol.

Understatement of the day!

In agreement w/ our resident psychotherapist cjlipps. Obsession is defined as being unhealthy and/or irrational and/or compulsive which all of us know our fixation of choice is not! or is it?

Which seems more healthy; loving your Mercedes or your Girl Friend?

When I am fixing the Mercedes and things are not going well I bet my Blood Pressure shoots up; not healthy.

... I only list the major cars I have... the actual list is just freaky. somewhere around 25 benzes alone... over 50 vehicles on site... and they all belong to me. none are for sale. well, I'm planning to sell one of them at the moment, but it's not why I have them. I'm certain I could lap you in personal vehicles, even if you choose the brand or type.:(

I know exactly what you mean. I remember bad jobs like "the compressor incident of 2010", or "the trailing arm that cost a leg".

Now that I have two, it doesn't effect me quite as much....but it still will mess me up.

vstech 02-03-2011 09:31 PM

wait... you lost a leg? what? I noticed no limp when you were at my house!

engatwork 02-03-2011 10:22 PM

My first wife always said I was obsessive about it. Wife #2 tells me to make sure I build a "den" area in the new shop with a couch/tv viewing area so she can spend time in there with me:). Wife #2 is the kind of wife you want to find. Your obsessiveness will only get worse with your current gf (as perceived by her). She will eventually get where she is actually jealous of the time you spend working on the car.

The difference between Vstech and Tyler, Tyler has all his cars on paper, except for maybe two. and Vstech has all his cars.

Since I have hypotension (my BP was 80/50) I guess working on cars is very healthy then ... shoots up to a normal range ... :D

As for being obsessive, I'm obsessive in everything I do. It's a matter of personality and sometimes obsessive-compulsion. I have a lifelong history of getting extremely deep into whatever it is I have an interest in. The car has been a steady obsession for me and probably the most positive. It's taught me a lot about my capabilities and has also introduced me to others who have a similar obsessive personality with regard to cars.
I don't know your girlfriend, but maybe it would help if you found out her obsessions (most people have them) and try to find out more about them ... maybe if you encourage hers, she'll be more open to yours. Honestly I don't think I would be compatible with someone who wasn't obsessive, about something. Wouldn't have to be the same things as me ... in fact that might be volatile. But I need someone who understands why I need to be in my garage tinkering with a parking brake when it's 15 degrees out and well past dinnertime, or why I fly to England to see a rock band.:)

My wife knows that I dream cars, parts, tools and repair procedures. :)

I talk in my sleep, she gets annoyed when I argue technical issues.

She never worries about loosing me to another woman, just the ooh shiny tool, etc, etc, for a while.. :D

Shoe size? it depends on the brand, but somewhere in the 12 range...

worst thing is being unable to find a pair of mechanix gloves that fit... xxl is tight.

With that many cars I have no clue where you have enough time to slap your neck.

To the OP. All women hate it men have something more important than them in their lives, no matter how temporary it may be. They hate it even more when it is an inanimate object. They cannot scowl, berate, nag, up one it or even seduce it. The good women will realize this and let the boy go play with his toy. They may scowl, berate, nag or seduce their man away still but they will let him play. Personally I can't work out of the house anymore. My wife will come out an infuriating 2-3 times towards the end of a long day and ask me if its done yet. I love her, shes a good woman but GOD does that get under my skin.

Oh come on. I know I'm the girl crashing the boys' tree house here so I'm not trying to spoil the commiseration, but ALL women are not like that. I, as well as most of my female friends, would much prefer to date a man with his own life and interest. I wouldn't be able to tolerate a man who wanted nothing but to follow me around, wait on me hand and foot and obsess over everything I do all the time. I realize I'm in the minority as a woman with a car-repair interest, but most women have their own things, whether it's the stereotypical make-up and shoes or art or horses.

Skid Row Joe 02-05-2011 02:28 AM

I try to interest the girls in one or more of my hobbies. Car maintenance is the last one on the list for me. Cooking, recipes and grocery marketing, housekeeping, happy hours, pets, home improvements, working out, travelling, come before the car deal with me.:)

Exactly ... most women would find something on that list to share with you. As long as you really click somewhere, I think most women are willing to let you have your time in the garage.

heh. no, the average woman would see that as a perfect reason to get rid of the old car, and get a new one with less problems.
I just keep extras laying around for her to drive if something goes wrong.

and yeah, the constant "how long before you are comming in" does get old...

Although I'm a terrific cook, I find that I am not attracted to women that either detest cooking, or cannot cook. Also, a clean house, car, and crisp, clean sheets on a firm mattress go a long way with me.
