'82 300td glowplug relay

Baby its cold outside and Adolph my daily drive does not want to cooperate, and hasn't since Monday night when the temperature went to low 20's.
In my readings on the forum I have determined my glowplugs maynot be working. I have cycled the glowplugs several times as many as 6 times and still no start.
I cycled the gp's and touched them no heat. In my readings I have decided that it maybe the relay mounted on the drivers side wheel well.

My question is, will the Glow Plug relay on a 1980 240D work on a 1982 300TD?

Thanks in advance

You'll need one for a 5 cylinder.

First make sure the strip fuse in the relay on the fender well is good. Look for cracks or breaks in the fuse. Then I'd check the voltage across the fuse to make sure you're getting voltage.

I'd check for voltage at the plugs and the resistance of each plug before condemning the relay. x2 on the fuse.

x4

On the above -- my strip fuse had a hairline break, easy & much cheaper fix than the whole relay.

While waiting for the weather to offer me an opportunity to fix the car I plugged in the block heater and had no problems starting it....course I could only be away from my extension cord and park the car for about 3 hours in todays 10 degree weather, otherwise the engine would cool down too much.

Less than 1 ohm on each plug. You do have pencil style plugs correct?

If there is a single wire going to each plug they are pencil.(parallel) If there are heavy sqiggly wires joining all the plugs together, they are loop plugs (in a series)

disconnect the harness at the relay and put one probe on the end of the glow plug and another on the block to read ohms. You could also test them at the harness at the relay but there you're also testing the harness itself.

Go to the Diesel Giant web site and there is a pictorial on how to check the Glow Plugs.
(This is not a recommend to buy parts there.)
When the page opens you will need to scroll down the page to see the pics.
