A New Diesel MBZ In America?!

Can I believe what I just read?

Look at this

Maybe not quite what you were thinking, but hell, we'll take whatever they'll give, right? A new 5-cylinder!

They are already on Freightliners lot's for sale. Not too bad looking and I think they would make a heckuva RV vehicle. I would be curious to see the similarities of the W123 engine mounting system and the one in the Sprinter. Just imagine dropping this engine/tranny into a W123 . Maybe one day I can find a wrecked one on ebay.

"...which makes 243-pound feet of torque,"

YOWsa!!!

that sure would be nice. Anyone have any idea what the displacement is? It's gotta be more than 3.0L...if not, wow!

The five cylinder CDI diesel is 2.7 liters. The current 3.2 liter six cylinder diesel sold in Europe makes 345lb-ft of torque.

Wish they would put that engine in their Daimler-Chrysler Dakota mid-size pickup truck. I assume it can't go in a USA car because of emissions issues?

Thanks for the article! My mind is spinning between future RV replacing my class-c motorhome and the passenger style option as we hauls tons of kids through our youth program.

Ken,

I've heard that the Dodge Dakota is going to get a V-6 diesel manufactured by Detroit Diesel.

Not sure if there's any validity to this rumor.

Not having any experience with Detroit Diesel products, how would they compare with the Mercedes engine product?

Is the current Mercedes 6-cyl diesel mentioned here a V-6?

Thanks,
Ken300D

IMHO - there is nothing wrong with the Detroit Diesel engines. I have heard a couple of complaints from the autoshop techs at work as to the 2 cycle/supercharged V8 design/layout - nothing specific though.

This is only a rumor. Detroit Diesel used a Durango as a test mule for a V6 engine. As I've had experience with DDC engines in trucking. I would not buy one. While they seemed reliable enough, they always seemed to have something "not quite right" and never put out their rated power.

I used to drive motorcoaches for a living, all of which were powered by Detroit Diesels. The old style 2-cycle Detroits (6 and 8v units of various displacements) were loud, inefficient, often leaked oil and sometimes didn't last as long as they were supposed to (especially the 8v92s). However, the Series 50 and 60 4-cycle Detroits that were in the newer coaches were excellent. Quiet, smooth, powerful and reliable. Having driven these, I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a vehicle powered by Detroit Diesel product.
