Moving the oil sump on an OM617

I'm looking to use a 617 to repower a Jeep comanche. To deal with the conflicts associated with the front oil sump I'm playing around with modifying the aluminum oil pan and oil pickup unit to move the sump more toward the middle of the motor.

Does anyone have an opinion on why it wouldn't work to extend the oil pickup tube 4" horizonally toward the rear of the motor?

Does anuyone have a bad 617 that your willing to part with the oil pickup tube unit? How about the aluminum oil pan? I'm fairly confident of modifying my existing aluminum oil pan but would prefer to have a spare to experiment on. I would definately like to play around with a spare oil pickup tube as I'm not sure what type of metal it is.

Thanks

If you need more info look for threads about putting 617 in toyota pickups, we are working on doing it right now and there is allot of good info on modifying oil pans exactly like you mentioned, with pictures.

There are 617 industrial engines with different style oil pans. Have you looked into those?
