Temporary removal of wastegate? good, bad, or ugly? 1992 300d

Ok I know that I need to do the wastegate swap, to solve alot of my issues. But until I can get all of that in line, is it safe to leave the wastegate in the closed position, with no vacum going to it? Or will this little turbo build enough to blow itself up?

as long as you don't floor it for very long, you'll be ok. it SHOULD be safe to floor it, if your overboost protection is working...

bad idea if your turbo has a few miles on it! If you over spin a higher mile turbo even a little it will not be pretty.

?? The 92 version is normally in the open position. Turbo not operating. When you add the vac it closes the wastegate so you get turbo boost. If you disconnect the vac line it will be in the open (no turbo). The pressure activated (88 version) is pressure activated (normally closed) and opens when pressure is applied. If you were to wire it so the turbo is always on you have no protection. You run the risk of over boost. Running what would be considered lean and excessive generating of heat. The turbo kicks in at approx 2400 rpm or so.

Well I tried it, and the car has never accelerated, ran, or shifted better than it did tonight. I was really impressed for a brief second i had to try to feel the shifts. And the car was much faster than normal. This is with the vacuum line removed from the actuator and then plugged. i didnt push the rpms, in fear of overboosting but it still accelerated very very well.

yea those will make upwards of 25-30 lbs of boost with no wastegate... take it easy, they are bomb proof but no sense on lighting the fuse to check it out is there?

yeah, its only temporary until I can get all of the wastegate swap together. Right now Im not letting her get much over 3000rpm. Which is weird, because before I had to take it to 3000rpm just to keep up in in town driving, now 3000rpm is more than enough to pull out into a 55mph road and not think anything of it.

What exactly did you try? I see the line from the wastegate, is that what you plugged? I am having the same problem with my 1992 300sd. Trying anything I can without overboosting my engine. I am new to the site and would appreciate any help or advice.

You have a FSM? Know how to read? Can actually find something easier than posting? WOW!!! Simply amazing.

A boost gauge would be helpful while driving when experimenting. I think all boosted cars should have gauges....actually, it would be preferable for all cars period to have a decent set of gauges from the factory.

He either hooked up the a constant vacuum signal to the wastegate actuator or wired the wastegate shut.
