stumped me. My only thought might be an old truck or industrial engine? There must be a stamping on there somewhere

There's a number stamped on the oil pan below the fan.

David, Have you seen this in person or just in photos?

I recently saw a picture of an MB1719 truck with a V-6 diesel. Engine looked very similar to that with 2 extra cylinders.

It's air cooled....makes me think of deutz. The tri stars on the engine do not look added on.

I really do need to get an account on Expedition portal.....

I'm with TBO, its either a truck engine or an industrial unit. I'm guessing the later considering it's mounting and whatever is attached to the back of it doesn't look like a transmission.....

If MB wont claim knowledge, this may be a hush hush project similar to a redheaded stepchild.

Perhaps much like Porsche, MB offered engineering consultation?

U gave bit seeb ut ub oersib
Ha Ha --- that's what, "I have not seen it in person" looks like when the right hand is moved over one key.

It sure looks like a generator\welder behind it. Sure is an interesting air cooled motor though.

Here's a link you don't have to register for. Scroll down and you will see a similar MB V-diesel in the picture where the cab is tilted forward.

It's a Deutz aircooled fl/f series from memory, made under licence now, forget the mb rockers, lots of rockers are interchangeable and it means nothing.... or it's one of the zeppelin diesels, which I have never seen....

I'd put money on the deutz with mb parts to rice it up though.

it's a watercooled motor, but the valve covers are similar...
here's another pic of the OM401 engine in that truck... not the same...

Looks like it could be used in oilfield services, or a drilling rig.
