606.962 Conversion in a G wagen

I'm probably going to post this on the pointed three website as well. So the G wagen specific questions may get a better response.

I have a 1991 300 GE. (463 Chassis) I've owned the truck for a bout 10 years and have done very little to the truck. It is currently my second car. My intention is to sell my 05 saab and drive the G, thus i've started a rebuild/modification to the G.

When i imported the truck i had always wanted a Diesel version but couldn't find one. So i have decided to swap the 300GE engine for the 606 Turbo from a 98 or 99 E class.

The recommendations from the G world is to replace the IP with one from the 603 and plunge it for the engine/truck to avoid electronics.

A couple of Questions.

Questions 1: I have my original transmission W4A028
722.394 i believe (or
722.396) .. its 4 speed automatic that is standard for my truck. Does this the 606.962 (turbo) and transmission bolt together with out modification plates?

Question 2. Will the transmission from the E class fit into my G? and Does it start in 1st gear or 2nd (The G Automatic starts in 2nd which makes it extra slow at the stop lights).. I - do not want a manual transmission - as this truck may one day be snow day driver for my parents.

Question 3. The fun one: As long as i'm spending the money and time on the swap i might as well get more Pony's for my effort. The stock set up using the 606 Engine,IP and Transmission get 177hp if my research is correct. I've heard that you can rechip it and get 220 HP - I'm more inclined to stay away from electronics/computer/limp mode features as I want the truck to have a balance between great performance and simple to repair.

How can i get more HP from the 606.962 engine matted with the IP from the 603. I know there is a lot of discussion on the superD forums and such but i'm not looking for a 400hp G. 220-250 would be what i'm looking for. Something that gives me plenty of acceleration and pulling power but retains the low end torque.

A. Watercooled Intercooler? Larger Turbo? setting up the 603 larger plungers?
B. If I am able to keep my 4 speed automatic will the increased torque cause problems for the transmission?

Kartek can probably help you on this one.

Otherwise this section of the forum might have some answers.

Nice.

A few of us here have driven an automatic 4 door G with a 603 non-turbo diesel and wow was it slow. As such I can definitely see why you would want more power. We both thought that with a turbo it would be fine and even a stock 606 would be plenty.

I would imagine that you have some interesting plans though

A nice similarly toned down 300GE was sold in CT not too long ago.

I'll have to find out where I saved the pictures....
