Hood in full upright postion?

I've seen in some of the DIYs that people refer to opening the hood in "the full upright position." Does my hood go up farther than the maddening "bang your head on the grille everytime I stand up" position? Just wondering. Don't want to give myself a concussion without good reason. Or break the grille. Whichever comes first. 82 300d by the way. Thanks in advance.

Yup, you can do it by yourself. Look at the little locking tabs on the "elbo" of the hood hinges.

yes. on the left and right side of the hood on the hinges there's 2 tabs, you need to push one, and push up a little and then go around and push the other one, then your hood will pop open into the 90* position on my car it's the drivers side first, then the passenger side.

look at the hinges.
see the little spring loaded levers on each hinge?
some cars I've seen the levers are bent, but if you open the hood then push down on it a little, have someone help, push the levers out then lift the hood, it will rise all the way vertical.
if it's windy be sure and tie it up, or it can fall on your head. later models have a locking mechanisim to hold the hood full upright.

Best advice of thread. Got a nice goose egg on the back of my head while swapping the SD's engine.

I was looking under the hood of a 2010 C63 and the owner asked me how the hood is raised full upright since my car was parked close by with the hood up.

I didn't know on that model but we figured it out. You simply keep pushing the hood up! The gas cylinders seem to have something of an "over center" and will only raise the hood so far on their own. In what I consider a step backward, these newer cars don't have a locking mechanism to hold the hood upright!

Of course, if the hinge locking-tabs got all bent and mangled by some brain-dead PO or service-station idiot trying to force the hood shut without unlockin them (like the ones on two of my diesels) you may need to use the 'broomstick-method'!

Happy Motoring, Mark

Revisiting this thread, I noticed when I open the hood of my 300D it opens up to a certain angle which looks to be too low to do anything good. Then, I need to "unhook" the lock tab on the LEFT side hinge so the hood lifts up a little bit more, then at this point the RIGHT side hinge lock tab will "bite" and lock it at a ~45 degree angle. At this point I can also inspect anything in the hood with enough head clearance to be on the comfortable side of things.

Then when I unhook the lock tab on the RIGHT side hinge, only then can I lift the hood to the upright position if required.

Once it is at the 90 degree service position, the LEFT side lock tab locks the hood in place. The RIGHT side lock tab has NO provision to lock the hood in the vertical position.

Is this how it is supposed to be? (I'm curious about the first "lock" that happens until the lock tab on the left side is released. )
