Hood Release Cable

On the '87 Wagon, my son tried to replace the hood release cable that was broken. He tied a string on the inside end of the cable and pulled it out. The string broke and now I have to snake it in, but there is lots of stuff in the way. Fuse box, and lots of wires under the dash.

Anyone else do this? Do we have to remove the fuse box and how would we do it?

Do we need to remove all the wiring inside also to gain access?

I had him route the old cable up and out the front hood so we can still open the hood.
