Removing part of the exhaust.... my 87 300d

In this picture,

you can see the part of the exhaust I would like to remove. That big tube with the shiny metal on it. My car has the ERG already removed and a cap there, but is there a way for me to just get rid of this pipe all together?

Sorry for my dumbness here, but I don't even know what that pipe is. I think it's something like a catalytic converter? Is the another Manifold available that doesn't have it and if so, does anyone have one?

I figured if I'm going to do all this work to the engine anyways I might as well do all the stuff I like.
