Help! :( my exhaust fell off (300TD)

Part of my exhaust fell off when I was driving up the office exit ramp... the "flex" pipe/downpipe got ripped so that part of the exhaust immediately after the engine was hanging beneath the car.

I tied the pipe this morning so it wouldn't drag on the way home later. The exhaust sound is loud and race-car like haha... yeah right

question is: is it safe to drive home? there will be moderate traffic i believe, wouldn't be going any more than 40 mph... aside from the sound, anything I should be worrying about?

soot maybe. a ticket?
you can get diesel fumes into the cabin with the pipe broken there, but aside from watery eyes you should be fine.

your engine may have a little more power since it has less pipe to force air through. but like others have said I dont see a problem

The turbo muffles a lot of it, but it is still quite loud. I had to drive about 40 miles that way once when my flex pipe mostly failed......the newer ones are better and made from the more modern stainless mesh.

I had it replaced with one of those accordion type with steel mesh outer layer thing. It looks absolutely robust. ANyway... I loved the low rumbling exhaust note... for a while, then it got annoying... what i DID love was the TURBO WHINE... it kept spooling the whole time i was on the accelerator. Too bad its gone now... oh well... haha

I had the same thing happen and discovered that a beer can and 2 hose clamps make a perfect "temporary" repair!

i couldn't use anything to bridge the gap coz a bracket that attaches to the tranny, which apparently helps hold up the exhaust, is missing. anybody have any pics of that missing bracket? what's holding up my entire exhaust system aside from that flex pipe up front... are 3 rubber hangers... 2 at the muffler at the very end, and 1 at the resonator(?)... I'd feel more secure if i knew there was a steel bracket of some kind somewhere along the exhaust system.
