DIY 300SD ashtray cupholder

I'm in the process of making a cupholder in the ashtray area of my 300SD. I'm writing up a how-to (also on my blog). Right now it is curing so I am breaking this into two parts. Here is what I have so far:

Taking the old ashtray apart revealed a couple things...1 - that it was incredibly simply designed with a plastic tray and pop-up lighter on a spring. 2. The front wood was just glued on. 3. It was asking for a mod.
You can see that it simply slid on rails, here is the outer housing:

Therefore, you could make a thin board-like structure to slide in and out--this was the idea behind my design. I wanted to keep it pretty simple, no metalwork, no hard cutting, nothing too crazy. Here's what I've done so far:

1. Cut out a template from cardboard
Traced out the circles, I used a coffee mug as a template...then cut those bad boys out! Here is the rough idea - it should look similar to this once finished (without the tear):

Next step was to cover everything in either fabric or fiberglass. I had an old flannel sheet lying around and flannel happens to be PERFECT for this type of application. A lot of custom audio guys use flannel soaked in resin as a base for custom speaker boxes. It isn't perfectly flat, but will be decent once the resin soaks the fabric:
Next, mix up the resin/hardener to specification (1/10 can of resin = 1/10 tube of hardener) and thoroughly soak the whole thing, however not leaving any excess resin floatting around. Stick a sheet of release paper (I use wax paper, it isn't too bad) under it so it doesn't bond to whatever surface it is drying on. Here it is, soaked in resin:

Right now it is curing. Part 2 will be following a good night's sleep and 8 hours of work.

cupholders!

This has been a sore spot for me since I got my 300sd. I like the idea of this pullout cupholder and hope to see it completed. Do you feel this will impact your ability to use the stereo? Do you have plans to relocate the lighter for phone/GPS charging? Just a thought. I tried the cheapy "2 for a buck" window mount cupholders and it was a fail. Until I see the winner in design, this is what I came up with for now. Glovebox locked! No screws, no damage, easy to remove.

That only works if you don't use the ashtray for its intended purpose. That and I take corners way too quickly to leave something in a cup holder...

A+ for creativity, though! It might work for some people.

Yeah. I'm on the E-cigs now. I did it for her. She doesn't like the smell of Marlboros.

Ha! Me too. Actually, I was wondering recently if taking hard corners puts any more wear on the wheel bearings and such than lighter corners do. What do you think?

Well, whatever happened here, I own this car now, and there is no ashtray in it. I always wondered about that...

I'm with her. The smell of cigarettes makes me feel like this guy: .

It might put more stress on the wheel bearings but I, personally, do not really care. Bearings are cheap and easy to replace. I worry more about the tires as those are more costly.

If you want an ash tray, I'm sure I can find one for you.

Tires -- ah, yes. Forgot those . If you can get your hands on an ashtray with decent wood, (I don't mind a few cracks, but nothing major), I'll buy it from you. Let me know if you have any luck. I don't care about the innards, as I'd be working on putting in gauges or cupholders...

OK. I'm about to head off to the junk yard to look at a 300SDL.

If you see a W123 (300D Turbo) speedometer cable, I'll take that too.

I just got back. I didn't find anything useful on the 300SDL. I was hoping for a dash. I am praying that daw_two comes through for me. I didn't see any W123s, either. Bummer day but I did get a first aid kit for about $2.

My current cup holder is a roll of duct tape on the passenger floorboard.
