Talking Went a little POR-15 crazy tonight

I decided to do a few things on my car tonight, one of them being the battery tray, which had light rust in it. While I was at it, I did the air filter cover, just because

I also decided to do the firewall (right?) and area under the battery tray even though it was pretty much fine. Who knows when I will take the tray out again.

I wish I could coat everything in it, I hate rust, though my car is about as rust free as they come, CA car for 26 years, and now its an AZ car.

while por-15 is a great primer it gives no rust protection when applied to painted surfaces.

I believe if POR-15 fully encapsulates the piece it will create a shield around it and no further water-air-oxidation (rust) will occur. Yes- If only on one side it can keep rusting.

I would put some paint on top of it though. Although not much UV light under there, the air cleaner will likely change over time and will show lots of dust/dirt, since it 's so shiny.

POR is some tough stuff for sure, and as mentioned, it is designed as a protection for bare metal, and to seal off the rusted areas from moisture and any further rusting.

If you didn`t sand and prepare the painted areas first, it could peel as any paint can and will.

FYI
If you painted over the holes that bolt down the battery tray, you should use a tap to clean out the holes first. I used it on my Datsun PU in an area where the wiper motor bolts down. when I was bolting the motor back down, one of the 3 bolts twisted off. I thought the threads would just cut through the paint like they probably would with any paint. there was resistance going in, and the damn thing broke off.

Like mentioned, the POR will degrade when exposed to to UV light. It will get chalky, and the silver will turn a greenish hue to it. there is a top coat paint, one is chassis black and they have another black that is an enamel that will hold up to UV light.

Brake fluid will lift off the POR like it will any paint.

also be sure to wear some Nitrial gloves, or you will wear the paint on your hands for a while. once dried, impossible to get off.

I just painted a spring box I dragged home from PNP for a 240D front seat rebuilding project Iam working on. came in the house a few hours later, and there is a black smudge next to my nose

It looks good what you did.

Good fun that POR-15 eh?

I did similar to my engine bay

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=286358

In this thread you can also see a light blue paint. This is POR-15 tie coat primer which allows you to safely paint over the top with whatever you want (you don't need self etching primer - in fact you shouldn't use one). I'm busy trying to replicate an under hood mat finish...

I wish the most rust I had on my car was on the air cleaner lid.

I was originally going to use POR-15 on my 300SD Project... (http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=288453)

But I opted to use Eastwood's stuff as it was a bit cheaper and seemed to be just as good, if not better. It was like $35 for a quart and it pretty much lasted the whole project. Pretty tough stuff too. http://www.eastwood.com/rust-encapsulator.html

What I really liked was this Internal Frame coating stuff. You need to protect both sides of the metal. It has this awesome spray nozzle thing on it and provides pretty good coverage. http://www.eastwood.com/internal-frame-coating-w-spray-nozzle.html

They have a lot of nifty/helpful products too.

2nd or 3rd putting a topcoat on the air cleaner lid. POR-15 will go from that absolutely beautiful glossy black to the color of old dried up plastic in less than a month. Happened on the underside of my car too, probably time as well as UV.

Big mistake on their part making it look so damn good out of the bottle! I saw that, and packed up my brushes, little did I know!

Charlie
which is it? brake fluid will lift it off just like any other paint, or is it impossible to get off?

Well got home today and checked out the areas, they all look good, except for my air cleaner lid, looks terrible, cracked topcoat. Oh well, at least I don't have to look at it all of the time. I'll probably pick another one up or try to strip this one and try again.

I painted the area behind the battery to give some extra resistance to any acid or water that gets on there, this way it will hit the POR-15 first and hopefully give me some time. I prepped it with all of the supplies included in the starter kit.

The bolt holes I avoided, thank god, I painted the screws on the battery tray and it was a pain to get it off so I could screw the nuts back on.

I'll take some more pictures as I put it back together.
