Smile I think I need a support group

As y'all may know, I'm a member of the Mercedes Benz Club of America, North Texas Chapter. Today we had a DIY/ Tech Session at Park Place Mercedes in Dallas. Not only were there certified MB techs on hand to give advice, the parts department had a special Wholesale price for MBCA members that paid the $10 entry fee.

With that said, y'all may also know of my on going "restoration" of my 300D. Putting 2 and 2 together you may have come to the conclusion that I bought a few little things to help my "restoration" along. And you'd be correct, but the list of little things is the kicker.

I spent $2956.80 in the course of 2 hours buying all those "little things" I needed for my car, plus I forgot a few things

Here's the basic list of my parts (I'm focusing on the mechanicals of the car right now):

Exhaust: down pipe, Intermediate pipe , Muffler

Engine: Oil Pan, Oil Pan Gasket, 5 glow plugs, upgraded Breater Tube, 2 gallons Anti Freeze, 000-989-10-25 (Citric Acid, for cleaning out the lime build up, mix a 10% solution to clean it out)
3 Oil Filters, 2 Air Filters, Radiator Cap, Mono Valve Magnet

Suspension: 4 Trailing Arm Bushings, 2 Subframe Mount Bushings, 2 rear shocks, 2 rear springs, Idler Arm Bushings

Brake System: 4 rotors, 2 front brake calipers, rear brake pads, all 4 wheel bearings, wheel bearing greese, that goop for the brake pads, 4 brake lines.

Weather Stripping: Front and Back Windshields, all 4 doors

Other: 5 center caps, Hamburg City Shield grille badge.

I forgot/ didn't purchase: Steering Box (got the # for some one that rebuilds em), Drive Belts, Right Rear Power Window Motor.

I think I need help, my addiction got the better of me, it's sad. Is there a MBA (Mercedes-Benz Anoynmous) chapter in the DFW area by chance?

Either way, I got a weekend project till May.

Bill:

Yes I could have got a newer/better condition car for that much, but then I wouldn't have the fun of taking it apart and putting it back together.

I'm sorry to say that I'm not familiar with Lynda Jansen. I think Ft Worth has a seperate chapter from Dallas and it's suburbs (one of witch is Plano).

I bet you would have only spent $1500 or so if you bought the parts from online places like www.thebenzbin.com or www.mbz.org/rusty

Just something to consider.

I feel better when I use OEM parts, I've had bad experiences using aftermarket stuff. (Long story)

In the end it really isn't that much. I plan on driving it as long as possible. Here in Texas it won't rust out from under you, so the body isn't a concern.

I'm having trouble making those parts add up to $3000. Did they charge you $500 for the muffler? $250 per spring?

There's nothing at all wrong with most of the parts at places like FastLane. They often come directly from the OEM manufacturer anyway.

I think you might be looking at another $500 for that rebuilt steering box.

However, regardless of the cost, you should be able to get your value out of the parts due to the longevity of the car. I always feel good if I get a month's use per $250 - that's a rather light new car payment these days. Usually far exceed this time/cost on my vehicles.

For the most part the prices I paid were consistant with Fastlane's prices some parts were significantly more and others were significantly less. The initial list I had made used prices from Fastlane, the total for that was $2997 w/o shipping. When I got to Park Place the list had got a couple more items added, but w/o adjusting the total price (using prices from fastlane). So I figure I paid roughly the same as I would have from Fastlane, but with out the shipping costs. Can you imagine how much shipping would have been?
