w123 300d odometer troubles: "repaired," and confused by complication

Foremost, let me say that I followed beautiful step-by-step instructions in the process of removing the instrument cluster and the speedo, using: http://www.dieselgiant.com/repairyourodometer.htm)

However, even after this DIY guide's tutorial, after reinstalling my cluster and driving around a bit, the odometer didn't register any movement!

When I had the speedo parts all laid out on my table with the odo in hand, the metal gear turned freely and affected the plastic gear which moved the rolodexing numbers. The numbers effectually moved forward and backward by rotating the metal gear to the side of the odo.

What else could be preventing the registration of miles to the odo!?

Does the speedometer function work OK? Meaning that the knurled knob at the end of the cable has been snugged down enough to engage the inner part of the cable with the speedo/odo drive?

you mean the metal gear was turning by hand? it's supposed to be locked firmly onto the shaft.

The Speedo worked... until I put locktite on the metal gear, and after that application the speedo started clicking metronomically, increasing tempo along with speed. Yikes! So I just unplugged it for my 4-hour drive from Tampa to Tallahassee yesterday.

You used locktite to secure the gray gear to the shaft?
