Battery question

Going to need a new battery for the 83 300D soon. According to what is in it now, and what I have read, a group 79 with 700 CCA is the correct battery.

Today I found a 5 yr warranty group 65 battery with 850 CCA on sale at Costco for $69. I did some quick measurements and it appears that it will fit with no issues.

My question is this. Should I get it (it does have 150 more CCA). Has anyone have any other suggestions for a good replacement battery?

Thanks,

Glenn

The battery question has been beaten to death, do a search. Any battery that fits "can" be used regardless of what a book says. If you want good stop looking at price and get a AAA battery or a interstate (or any other 6 year battery).

I always do a search before I ask a question, and I did do a search before I asked this question. Your right, the battery subject has been beaten to death. So much in fact that it is practically impossible to find an answer without spending hours reading through hundreds of posts.

I asked the question in the hope someone could give me a quick answer and save me a ton of reading, but I guess I'll just go with my gut. Sorry to bother the forum.

I could be wrong but I believe the battery you need is a group 49, with a min of 760 CCA. Just bought one and intend to use it with a desulphater at the same time. Noticed that the 84 month batteries at 140ish don't offer much in the way of performance, I think the extra cost is to allow for an "extended warranty period" -just MHO. I bought a battery from Walmart with an unlimited three year warranty with a high CCA 860 for 89.00 dollars -bet with the added cost of the desulphator and good maint, I can get more than 10 years from this battery -maybe 15

everyone, Please give a good answer in addition to the search recommendation. it's offputting to new members to get a "Go find the answer yourself" message.
the correct battery for the 300D car is the mercedes battery from the dealer. a group 49 is a good fit, and it's got the correct orientation and depth for the battery terminals. and it's got a 1000 cca rating usually.
the CORRECT battery is a tad thinner, and has a slightly lower CCA on it. 950 I think... I don't remember the group number though. it's the one with the handles that fold into the middle, and is often found in a white case. all the chain stores carry both styles. wallyworld has the lowest price on them, but the quality has been questioned, if it's an excide instead of the johnson controls...

I just put in an Optima red top. I had a $50 off coupon and it came to $127. Yeah it was expensive but i've heard how much better Optima's are. After install? Yes it was worth it. That battery spins a 617 in below zero weather better than any other battery i've had.

psaboic,
You have nothing to apologize for you question was a good one.

First though,
Welcome to the forum !! As you will have found some of us are very passionate about our cars. Generally you will find the members are very friendly & keen to help in any way they can.

There is NO such thing as a stupid question on here, though some of the answers you get may leave you wondering.

I just did a quick count & realized I have 16 batteries here in various cars & equipment.
My rule many years ago was to as far as possible standardize on one size battery.
A good thing to realize is that the weight of a battery is a good indication of how good it will be. Most of the weight is the lead in the plates. If you find a light weight battery with good specs, run from it as it is unlikely to last. Its a bit like a small motor in a car thats been all tricked up. With a motor, when all is said & done "you cant beat cubic inches" !! For a car/truck/tractor battery it goes "you cant beat pounds weight" !!

I hope we can at least all agree on that !!

Good luck with your decision. Please help us all by posting back what you decide.
It would be great to hear from you in the near future & in about 3 years to be told your battery is still going strong !!!

I believe your talking about Group 93. It is in fact the same dimensions but a tad shorter in height.

I've always heard to get a battery form the place with the best turnover, because then the battery hasn't been sitting on the shelf for 6mo. normally this means walmart

But check the date-stickers anyway. My nearest WalMart obviously doesn't sell many group-49 batteries as a recent check revealed the pair in stock were two years old. However a WalMart store a few miles away had fresh ones.

Happy Motoring, Mark

I took a fluke and a load tester to Wally World to test the group 49 battery I purchased - easy insurance!

I think the current manufacturer for the Walmart Group 49 battery is Johnson Controls. That's who made the ones at my Walmart, although I didn't look to see how old they were.

I agree with the heavier the battery the better. That said, the latest Walmart group 49 battery is much lighter than one from 5 years ago. I can feel the difference lifting it out of the car as it takes very lttle effort compared to the old battery and I know I am not getting stronger.
