Turbo oil drain tube check valve- can't find one!
In the last couple of days, I wrote about an 87 300SD turbo I have for sale, and am pretty confident that the problem might be s clogged tube or check valve in the oil pan that the tube runs into. I've found all parts for the repair EXCEPT the actual check valve. (gasket, o rings, grommet for the pan can be found) What I'm not able to find is the check valve. My question is this- 1) Is it possible to just clean the check valve if it's not damaged, or 2) Is there another check valve that can be duplicated in it's place. The reason I ask is that the pics I've seen of the check valve on other threads look an awful lot like the check valve I've been having problems with in my vac pump. Or, if I the cleaning it up doesn't work and there are no substitutes, where can I find one. My regular ordering place says they aren't available anymore. (That's the place in Arizona). Also I checked Fastlane and Dieselgiant, and they don't have them either. Anybody??

You can clean them with either brake cleaner or paint thinner. Wish you luck

Also, tell me you are kidding.... You are going to take the time to pull the oil pan, pull the collar and re-install all of this without "replacing" a part that only costs a couple bucks and is "known to fail"? I see no logic in that.

snookwhaler, that's why I asked the question. I can't find them. Where do you get them if you can buy just the check valve? Cleaning it is if I can't find one. As of yet, I haven't found one. I can buy a rebuild kit for my late model vac pump for about $95, or if the older models have the same check valve, I can get a rebuild kit for around $11, only it's Meyle instead of MB. Maybe I can buy the MB kit if my pump only has one bad valve in it and kill two birds with one stone! But the question was - Where can I find one? I need one. I want one. It would be really nice to have one. But first, I have to figure out where to get it! Now I know that I can use a vac pump valve, I know where to get one with a kit, and I know I can clean it. (It's apparantly clogged, and it won't be right till it's not clogging anymore) But, like I said, I've checked all the places I know of and written one internet company that says they have them, but I won't hear back from them till tomorrow. Once again, if anybody knows where I can get a single vacuum check valve to fit this, just let me know. By tomorrow, I will have heard back from the place that says they have this part in stock. (Found them after I wrote this post). If they don't have it, I'll order the old pump kit, and have an spare, then give the rest of it to anybody who has an old style pump. But thanks for the replies! I would have had to clean it if I weren't able to locate another part. And if anybody knows where to get a single check valve, I'm all ears.

Of Course Your Engine may be different. Again on a 617.952 some one poured some sort of cleaner (Marvel Mystrey Oil would work) through the Breather Element in the Air filter so it would run down to the bottom where the check Valve is. The advantage to this is it might help clean out the whole tube and if it works you would not have to drop the pan (you should do that before the Oil change.) On a 617.952 there is an almost circular C type piece of metal/spring that retains the Check Valve. If you remove that you can get the Check Valve out and clean it what ever way you think is best.

Yep.... That is my fault. I was reading the post then went back to look at what type of car and saw the signature and figured it was the 81.
My car has been parked now for a month because of a turbo oil drain leak. I have the check valve and all the parts. The 87 is completely different.

Just for clarification, is the check valve still available? That is, the air/oil separator drain check valve for 617.95X motors.
I have mine rigged up to a catch can and am going to pull and clean next oil change, but if I can get a new one I would.....not looking to buy a vacuum pump repair kit for the one check valve though.

I was just told by a guy who called about the car that these check valves can be bought at any NAPA store.(?) That would be great. Think I'll take a picture down (and the part number) and see if they have it or can get it. As I said, if I'm going to get in there and do the manual labor on this, I might as well go the whole distance and pull that vac pump and rebuild it, too. I really can't see what would make the new rebuild kit so much more costly than the old style. Not $80 worth, at least. But if I can't get it sold one way, (as is) I'll do that, then raise the price.
Charmalu, that check valve pic is the one that mounts in the top of the housing attaches to the mainline out to all the other 'users' in the car. I just installed one of those in the "bad" pump. I don't know how you would get that vavle out of the housing without damaging it. The actual valve is about the size of a quarter. (See pic below, borrowed from a link in my other post about this problem posted a few days before this one) Before I get into any tearing apart of anything, I WILL try the Marvel Mystery oil down the tube. I actually thought about pouring some in the oil fill and seeing if it would help, but I thought if it was that clogged up, maybe I should just open it up, but this sounds a lot easier. Thanks diesel 911. And thanks to everyone who has replied and tried to help out. I've always been a firm believer in the line, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth." But I always feel like anything I sell has my name on it, and being honest can really put a negative light on some things sometimes. I'd rather fight it and fix it than have to be embarrassed in front of someone that's looking at something. Most of the people who are looking at this car are wanting something to drive, not work on. I won't even go into the discussion about "Well, everybody I know (that would be you all) that owns one DOES work on them." Oh well. A blessing and a curse all in one, I suppose.

Unsticking Valve
Quote:
I recall a thread where the member unstuck his valve by pouring some motor oil down the drain tube and then pressurizing it with a hand air pump until the valve popped open and the oil drained down into the pan. He just used an oil-soaked rag as packing to seal the pump hose to the drain tube. Good Luck, Joseph |
