progress on my CWC 124 TD

my wagon got some wrench time from me today.

the 603 has 3 dead cylinders...
I swapped two of them, and the dead pots stayed same.
I pulled the valve cover, and watched the cam... no issues.
I pulled the intake, and watched the intake valves open and close... no issues.
I set my hand on the intake ports as the motor was running. no difference between the dead pots and the live ones.
I pulled the oil cap off the car, and it smoked like a freight train and would not start...
put the cap back on, and the car starts and runs... WTF?

anybody care to armchair analyze this one?
I think I'll pull the head next and look everything over.

no, not yet, not much point really. 3 dead pots? and while cranking with the oil cap off, each compression stroke blows THICK whitish smoke out the hole. I'm leaning towards cracked head/blown head gasket... odd that every other pot is dead though... all the even cylinders are non firing.
I have a buyer for the block, and I've got a spare engine to drop in... I'm not too worried about it, just thought I'd run it past everybody and get opinions.
