On my 1987 300D, shifts are too hard at low RPMs and too soft when more power is being applied. What seems to be happening is that the vacuum is too low during gentle driving but too much when power is applied.
From the vacuum nipple marked "TRA" on the blue vacuum transducer (large disc shaped device near alarm horn) I am getting 15" Hg on a cold engine (cold-tranny solenoid energized) and 10" Hg on a warm engine (solenoid off). I revved the engine to ~3000 but the vacuum only decreased a tiny, tiny bit. My understanding is that it should drop down to nearly zero when the linkage is moved. I am getting 20-30" Hg vacuum at the line that goes to the vacuum transducer's "VAC" port.
What's inside the transducer, a rubber diaphragm? It is riveted shut! If it is rubber, I would like to replace it due to age, but if it is not rubber, I do not want to waste $65. Any ideas where I should check next? I am going to go out right now and see whether the check valve at the IP is backwards.
Thank you!
