Exclamation Dead TURBO? Tranny? SLOW as CHRISTMAS?? HELP@!

Dead TURBO? SLOW as CHRISTMAS?? HELP@!

Hi Folks,

I've owned my 98 E300D diesel for about 4 years and I've never run across this problem (a handful of others but not this one...HAHA!!)

I've noticed the last week or so that the car didn’t have much POWER... At low speeds (under 40) seemed about the same. Hit the gas it speeds up, tranny changes gears and I'm up to 40 in OK time.

The problem is if you PUNCH it to get out of a tight spot. Then engine will race up to 3000-3500 RPM but the car doesn’t really go any faster... It SLOWLY will accelerate..

Today when I was merging in to highway traffic I was going about 45 and needed to speed up fast since a MACK truck was coming up fast.. Well, I pushed the pedal down about 3/4 down and same RPM's jumped but car didn’t...

Then I put it to the FLOOR... 4000 rpm.. SLOWLY crawling faster... then I got a Check Engine light... Don’t know what it is since I had to get to work but I'll check it out on the way home and see what code got thrown.

1st thought

-No gas getting to the engine... I tossed that idea since the engine is reacting jumping RPMs

2nd thought

-transmission... OUCH...

Possible.. At 40-60mph when you punch it ... the "kick down" doesn’t happen... At lower speeds it will but still not very responsive.

LOVE TO HEAR some ideas that won't cost me a few thousand on a new TRANNY!!?? Thanks Chris

I'd pull the fuel filters just to eliminate the possibility.
do the RPM's instantly jump? if so, your transmission/TC must not be right. get the car in a level spot, and pull the dipstick. (car should be at operating temp, and should be in park idling)

Exclamation

Thanks Ill do that...

Which fluid should I use to add to it?

Ive put about 80K on this car and it has 280K on the clock.

I have never replaced the tranny filter... ??

I have heard horror stories about being very careful (leather gloves) so there is no dust etc.

Im sure I can do it myself... but SHOULD I?

thanks chris

yup. leather is best to wipe with. also, I'd check the owners manual on which fluid to use. DexIII is what is used on the older ones...

check the flat O-ring in the metal fuel filter where the 22mm? screw goes thru. My old SDL had the same issue. it could barely get up to 60 mph on freeway. when it was parked, I could rev it up to 4500 rpm. all gears shifted fine when I was driving it around. it was the cracked in the O-ring which cause it starving for fuel.

yeah, first step with a diesel should always be change the fuel filters...
but he's having RPM climbs under load on the highway, not at idle... it's more of a transmission issue with these symptoms...

As I was looking around fuel lines...

I may have figured it out... I SURE HOPE SO..

I noticed this vaccum hose was off... so I plugged it back in..

What is it?

And would it give me the symtoms I mentioned?

very unlikely. vacuum usually only affects shift stiffness. have you checked the fluid level in the transmission yet?

Hello,

Thanks for the great info.

The hose that was off in the picture was the lower one.... I plugged it in last night and she ran GREAT just as before..

I did notice that while I was mashing the gas to make her GO I popped the P0243 Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction code.

Would that have anything to do with it?

Car RUNS GREAT now...

I was going to run it a few days and see if the code stays or if it just popped when the car wouldn’t GO!! HAHA

-Tranny level: I don’t have a dipstick but I did do some great research yesterday and in one of these links is how to make your own.
