190D over heating
 

My new to me 190D has been sitting for 10 years. It pegged the temp gauge on a 3 mile test run.
The fan never came on. It was 70 degrees. I removed the thermostat and tested. It opens at 180 degrees.
Are these critical for the fan to run if going down the road?
I have removed the fans from other vehicle and did not over heat whil driving.

The fans wound not be the cause of that, first make sure antifreeze is full, then get a new thermostat and check your water pump. If its been sitting for 10 years, I would get a new water pump.

What year is your 190D?

My 84 190D clutch fan is controlled by an electric clutch. The sensor is at the top of the thermostat housing. A 2 prongs sensor and if you short the pins the fan clutch will run. IIRC, it is rated at 95C.

The Aux fan ( high speed ) is controlled by the sensor on the left of the engine, half way down the block behind the clutch fan. It is a one pin sensor. If you short the wire to chassis then the aux fan would come on. I think it is rated at 105C.

You need a non contact thermometer to check out the actual temperature. It is possible that the dash gauge or the temperature sender ( between injector 2,3 ) are faulty.

Check your coolant also as the other member suggested. Good luck.

It is a bad head gasket.
How hard is it to replace?
Are the timing chains crimped?

You can change the head gasket without removing the timing chain btw.

This car sat for 15 years. It has 112K on the od. no rust. Body a little rough' interior seats good, dash all cracked up. I looked at the car 200 miles from home. The guy said he got it running and drove it. Transmission shifted ok.
It was snowing when I looked at it. So I didn't hear it run. Took the guys word.
I paid for it and went after it 6 weeks later because of the bad weather. I
These are hard to find with low mileage and when one is found They are like gold.

Anyhow I got the car home and it was hard to start. Had to glow it several times. Bad fuel maybe. Drove it 2 miles and it pegged the temp gauge. Wow!! removed the thermostat and it opened at 180*. Reinstalled the thermostat. Started it and ran at fast idle for several minutes. Temp didn't go past warm. Removed the coolant cap and bubbles came out. Opened the throttle wide open for a second and coolant gush out like a geyser.
Next I will run a compression test to see what else?
I suspect that the guy shot ether to it while the glow plugs were lit up and blew the HG. Oh well I knew better. But I really don't think the guy knew!
I believe that I will be ok in the end. Maybe $2000 invested in a low mileage 190D.

Bring it over to my house and I will do it, I just did my wifes 92 300D and just about finished rebuilding my 84 190D. When Im done with my 84 I think I will start looking for another project to work on. I would also replace timing chain.

Did you get your headgasket replaced? I finally got mine on the road.
