What turbo is this???

Got this turbo for free from a good friend..from searching on the forums it is a KKK and it has been said it spools faster..got some #'s here on a tag that's on the back..
002 096 1699
843 480 517
5326 9706 031

On the front side...5326 101 5080 6W...with the 3 K's..

anyone know what's it from? Would it be a usable turbo for a 240? & yes I want to turbo a 240D..

This turbo appears to be a KKK K26 used on the OM 617 turbo diesels of varying, but mostly later production years. KKK - Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch AG (German turbine manufacturer; now aka 3K-Warner Turbosystems GmbH)
I have one on a 1985 300SD. Some of the later W126 SDL's OM603 and SD 3.5 rodbenders (I think) had KKK's on them. It is a good turbo with an adjustable wastegate and is smaller than a Garrett, which may be perfect for the OM616 in your 240D. You may want to read a little more about this sort of mod, as the 616 and 617A did not have piston squirters to cool the pistons. If you do not care about longevity of the engine then it's a non-issue.

There should be 4 lines of numbers on the tag. One should start with the turbo type, such as "K26"
The first two digits of the line starting with 843... signifies the production year.
Therefore yours was built in 1984.
The xx26 ... Signifies a K26 series.

Look closely as there are more. The discrepency here is that the OM617A did not have a turbo. OM617.9XX were turbocharged. Yours looks identical to the turbo on one of my 1985 SDs. I adjusted the wastegate to give about 12psi boost. It spools up around 1,500 rpm's as well. My other SD and my 300D have Garrett T3s. I say do it to the 240, but know the consequences. You may need a set of 617 turbo injectors. Ask some in the diesel performance section if thts true. You will want to install a boost gauge and pyrometer to at lest monitor things as you tweak it. Document it and share with pics...

Like I said,I'm new at this!...I'm collecting parts now for the 240D. I'll take pics & let you all see how it comes out. I realize it's not wise to do,but I like "odd" things..

I'm right there with you, brother. I think it would be a trick little ride. I too am into what everyone else is not. Aside from diesel stuff, I find it appauling that small block bowties and blue ovals are the preference for power in rods, mild customs, and others. I am considering a 617 powered Ford A truck. Not many oil burners customs out there.

Im a (die hard) chevy guy with a list of small block powered cars and i have a 240d turbo, what does that make me? And eventually when you get tired of all the smoke after turning your pump up a set of larger elements will be high on the list to allow the newly found fuel to be injected in a shorter amount of time (smaller holes take longer to bleed pressure off yada yada yada) and thus burned and turned into power instead of just leaving a trail of diesel clouds behind you

Talk about odd & weird powered vehicles....I have a 1/4 mile track car that is powered by GM's "red-headed step-child" engine.... A CADILLAC...best time so far is..
9.80 @ 155mph in the 1/4...how's that for strange & unusual??
Tired of seeing only "Bowties" out at the track!

Cool, oiler. It woulnt be a 472 or a 500 would it? These were amazing engines! And, no offense to chevy sb owners. I have one in my Suburban. A great engine, just not too different that's all.

I would consider you to be "well-rounded."

lol I suppose well rounded "might" be the word. I have a northstar w/trans and donor car sitting in my garage getting ready to go in my 04 cavalier , a 383 lt1 in my 95 firebird, a carb 350 in my 89 silverado (looking for a 6.5 td to burn some bio ), and a turbo on my 240 which will be the donor car for my samari off-roader when i find the right one. maybe i need less projects...

And by our little red headed step child engine would you be refering to the 4.6 northstar? we only dont claim it cause we didnt do well with aluminum blocks in the begining

you suck, i would rather get a complete wrecked 2500 so i can upgrade brakes, axles, trans, t-case, blah blah blah. My truck works hard and it has earned a little love. it has been on several long road trips, goes to the local trails and mud holes a couple times every month, and moonlights as a recovery truck when the tow company i work for now falls behind.
