window alignment

I have a 1983 300CD with 374,000 and running likes it new..... But on the freeway I notice an air flow noise from my passenger door. I looked at it and the window does not line up properly to the back quarter window and therefore does not have the rubber is not flush on the passenger window thus creating a gap for air noise.... the door shuts properly but it does seem the level of the door does dip a slight bit below the body.

I think the hinges on the front are tightly screwed... but if it were not aligned properly wouldn't it be hard to close the door? Is there a way to adjust the height of the latch on the body to lift the door a little? Are my hinges bent?

A little help would be nice....

Thanks

You can try adjusting the striker plate but I advise you to NOT touch the hinges unless you know what you are doing. It's very hard to get a MB door realigned.

There is an adjustment in the FSM, too large a file to post here, PM me if interested.

I would suggest that it is not a door problem but a window regulator problem that most of us coupe owners have had from time to time. It seems to be caused by closing the door by pushing the window instead of the door itself which causes alignment problems with the window. The regulators are repairable and you can find out how by doing a search.

I recently posted a DIY on lubing the coupe rear window channel with some very brief instructions on aligning the window. There are several adjustments.

But if your door "sags" a bit when it's closed it sounds more like a hinge+striker problem, or possibly a bad rubber/plastic trim problem along the bottom that is keeping the door from closing properly.

Do you have an even panel gap along the vertical gap between the door and the frame?

air gap

no... as I mentioned the door does seem to dip at most a 1/4 inch below the rear body but probably not that much

the hinges seem find... what is the striker? it is true that rubber that attaches to the rear window could be better... but I think the real issue is the alignment of window or door

the door closes easily no problems
doesn't seem out of line but as I said does seem slightly lower than the body and thus maybe the window leaves a gap for the wind

thanks for the help

There are two issues - one with door striker alignment and the other with actual window/seal alignment.

My DS door has good alignment in that the trim all lines up straight before it engages the striker. When it does, it gets pulled downward. The other side doesn't have this issue.

But the other side of it is window alignment. My DS especially isn't right, a bit too high. Causes the window to not sit exactly flush with the nook in the window seal. Still seals and is windtight for the most part, but not exactly right.

Also, check the condition of the upper seal. The window can sit on it where the midpoint is and the two parts of the seal come together. This effectively pushes the window outward, causing a small open triangle. Is it all better if you drop the window then put it back up with the door closed? The front short seal to forward longer seal, by the mirror can also be an issue.

It can sit up pretty bad against the back-midpoint of the seals if the window goes too high:

Hey where'd you get the new top edge seal front section at? the only stuff i have seen is that guy from taiwan-singapore? on ebay

JHZR2 03-31-2011 01:53 PM

That's the place... If I was to do it again I think id buy OE unless the car was a rustbucket or on it's way out... Appatently OE has felt lining and the front section by the mirror...

ngarover 03-31-2011 02:17 PM

just a question, but is this the CD that happens to be for sale in craigeslist in GA?

http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/ctd/2262317649.html

(which by the plate seems to be an 82, not an 83 as in the listing)

JHZR2 03-31-2011 02:22 PM

Huh? You asking me? If so note my location and affinity for MB diesels. Mine was from LA and is NOT for sale...

carnac 03-31-2011 02:27 PM

the answer is no

I am in California and mine is not for sale either

toomany MBZ 03-31-2011 07:03 PM

That's a massive window misalignment, is it door alignment related?

Can you roll the window up when closed and it'll fit better?
