1985 300CD axleshaft

I guess my axle-shaft is gone because i can hear a jack hammer like sound coming from my right back wheel. I went under the car and with my hand I could move it. It seems that the shaft is wiggling between the wheel and the differential the rubber seals are gone also.

What is weird is that the other side of the car (which is working fine) I can also move the axle-shaft. I also remember reading somewhere here that these back axle-shaft do have some play.

My question is ; What keeps these axle-shaft in place? The rubber seal? If not why i have play in both sides but just the side without the seals is making that terrible noise.

Thanks in advance for the help folks!!

There are C clips inside the differential that hold that end of the axle in place. Then there is a bolt on the wheel side that is in the center of the rotor.

To get the shaft out you have to drain the differential and take off the back cover. There are spacers that look like washers on the inside of the differential you'll need to save.

My advice is DO NOT buy cheap chinease axles. I did and regretted it, leaked after 1,000 miles terribly. I bought new German made axles for $300 or so total. Make sure to get the axle seals on either side of the differential. I sealed my diff cover back on, was leaking before and that fixed it.

Good luck!

jackhammer sounds could be from many things.
can you take a picture of the seals that are gone?
most axles fail by rupture of the bellow like boots, and the oil pours out, then the bearings inside grind themselves to bits.
the antisway bar mounts are known to produce banging noises too...

If hes thrown some bearings in the axles you can get quite a hammering....

hey guys thanks for the replay.

Basically I found some good info on other threads here and I will try my luck with a Chinese one.

The noise coming from my car was so bad that I had cops stopping me and neighbors complaining so I had to do something quick while I wait for the new shaft to arrive.

Basically I noticed that if the shaft was pulled close to the wheel the noise would stop. The problem is that when making turns the shaft goes back in the direction of the differential and the freaking noise would re start. So I drilled 3 holes on the housing of the spider joints right where the collier of the rubber boot is. Than i attached a collier on the shaft itself about 4 or 5 inches above. Than I attached 3 break springs from the holes to the collier, the springs have a lot of tension and it pulls the shaft against the wheel keeping it in place while still allowing the shaft its 1 inch or so normal movement.

I know it is a tacky way of dealing with the problem but so far so good the noise is gone and hopefully it will last until the new shaft arrives
