Help Guys! IP removal 617.952

Went to a pick-a-part yard today, they had a 1982 300d turbo on the lot. So I started to pull the IP to have as a backup, removed all lines attached to the IP and the 3 huts at the front of the IP, tried the slid the pump backward to remove it but it wouldn't budge the 3 nuts a the front was all that I could see holding it on. I did a search on here for removing the IP on a 123 nothing, but found one on a 124 and it said to remove the left handed bolt that's behind the VP so question is do I have to remove the bolt behind the VP to remove the IP on a 123? I've got a Haynes book the are worthless.......Thanks Norman

On the 617 engine, there is a bracket at the rear of the IP. Hard to see and even harder to reach.

That bracket is probably down there where we suggest ' put a towel into that area' because you are going to drop nuts and bolts or things into there and they are really hard to get out.... LOL

On my 606, you have to remove the vacuum pump and the big bolt through the sprocket. I figured they were all the same.

there is a bracket on 603.971 motors at the back of the IP also... on top though. took me all of 5 minutes to remove an IP from the motor... that had no head or vacuum pump.

I'll rename the thread to be more descriptive.

Are you guys sure there is enough room to slide the IP back w/o removing the oil filter housing? I just looked at my 85, and there isn`t much room between the two.

I think there is enough space - there certainly is on my non-turbo 617... however it is easier if you remove the coolant tube (if fitted) that runs between the IP and the filter housing; by doing this you get some more swinging space for your 13mm spanner on that back nut.

Although this is probably not going to be a problem - but just in case - if you really can't get to that back nut consider attacking the two nuts that bolt the bracket onto the block. These are more accessible from underneath: so this is really only really helpful if the motor is out!

I measured the distance between the vacuum shut off actuator and the filter housing, and it is an inch. from the bolt below it about 3/4 inch.

I pulled the IP of a junk 617.951 and I had no trouble getting it to clear the oil filter housing. It did have the small bracket on the back as was noted by Tango which would have been easy to miss if the motor would have still been in the car.
