Metal in transmission pan..need damage control
Bought an 83 300D w/722.3 X-mission understanding that the x-mission was shot. Dropped the pan to inspect- no real metal. Tweaked around on the vacuum and mod pressure. Test drives were all the same- heavy flairing from 3rd-4th. Obviously now, the band is shot, and the pan is now full of metal chunks. I assume my whole transmission system is contaminated with metal. What is the best way to clean and purge the transmission cooler and lines?

well i pulled my 722.321 apart last night, the tip of my reactor valve failed and i had chunks of metal in my pan and all around.... it was initially dissasembled due to failing clutches and bad flaring... download or buy the ATSG manual, dissassembling it isnt as bad as you might think... lots of steps but no real specialty tools are needed except for a DEEP 30mm 12pt socket mbp/n 126589020900 for the rear shaft nut a 1 3/16" is also close enough. im in the middle of this project as i type... rest of parts should be here tomorrow. GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the info. I pulled a 722.3 from a 81 300sd today at Pullapart. The motor was locked up so I hope thats the reason its there and not the tranny. Hard to pull in the gravel and with no jack, plus since it was locked up there was no way to free torque converter. I'm going to put this one in the 83 300d and play around with the the metal maker just to see whats in there.
