suddenly, hard starting

Would a vacuum leak cause hard starting? My 240 is all of a sudden hard to start for none of the normal obvious reasons.

I can not see how. The only vacuum device motor related is the shutoff. To eliminate that just disconnect it temporarily and try to start. Far more likely is something in the fuel system or glow plug circuit.

The lack of a vacuum leak would cause hard starting. The key switch is supposed to release vacuum on the shut off valve when it is turned on. If it doesn't, the shut off valve is still activated. Pull the brown vacuum line off the shut off valve and see if it starts. If it does, vacuum is not being released by the key switch.

So the fact that my 240d does not have a vacuum leak should mean that I am plagued with hard starting problems ?

Yes, as long as you think of the key-bleed-off-system as a leak.

Why not start with the obvious? Glow plug bad? Time to get out the multimeter.

I assumed the 'for none of the obvious reasons' included the glow plugs, fuel, bad starter etc.
