removing cd player???
hello,
I have an 81 240d. I recently purchased it. The current CD player in it doesnt work. I have one laying around the house I would like to put in it. I took the ash tray out and thought I may see something. Nope. I dont have the removal keys for the Cd player ( even though I am not sure that would even help). I dont want to get into a huge project taking the heat control panel out. Is that How to get to the cd player. Is it easier than I think? Anyone have any ideas? thanks Jake |

It is obvious once you get into it - at least on the SD. There are vids on youtube.

Not only do you remove the ashtray, but the metal frame that it attaches into. Two screws all the way forward, IIRC. That should free it on the upper lip of the ashtray frame/lower lip if the inserted radio.
From there if too much is bent/stuck in and you dont have the key, you may be SOL besides breaking the old stereo.

It would probably be easier with the removal tools/keys. I'd recommend taking the car to a stereo shop and asking to borrow the tool for the brand of stereo. If that's not an option or they won't help you for free then look at the attached pic.
If the radio was "properly" installed then your problem is harder since the installer should have engaged the anti-theft tabs into the console. But you may be lucky and the tabs aren't fully engaged. The wood trim around the A/C "should" just pop off. The ashtray metal bracket has two screws. Removing these items may let you see what you're working with. You might consider removing the side of the console, too, in order to get visibility. Read up on the threads on wiring. It's really basic stuff, but for some reason people hacked the OE wiring. (Skinny red = steady power, thick red = switched, brown = ground, gray/violet = headlight; antenna = blue black or blue+red) The pic is for a current version JVC head unit. Other frames may be similar. There's another recent(ish) thread that shows pics of the OE metal clips that were left in place that jammed up an aftermarket install. |
