Question on the W123 ignition switch

When reinstalling a new tumbler in the lock, can I get the wiring plug coming in from the rear of the assembly to lock in before I put the tumbler in? I have been fighting this thing, thought it was locked in and finished , checked and found it wasn't. Will the switch operate if it is not locked in? I had to take it all out in order to remove the locking pin in the column.

Yes, provided the lock is position 2 (same position where you insert the paper clip to remove the tumbler), when the key in the elec switch is lined up with the slot in the connector that you are having trouble with.

I've been working on mine in the 84sd. The new ignition assembly did not have the locking plastic key for the electrical connection so I didn't have to worry about it. But in looking at the old locking system I thought you could get the electrical connection to lock simply by turning the mechanism with a screwdriver. But to install the tumbler, it seems the mechanism has to be in the unlocked position since the tumbler must be reinstalled with the paper clip and tumbler in #1 posiition.
