seized bolt alternator bracket help
the lower bolt on my alt bracket will move about1/8 turn in either direction and that's it. working at it a bit only succeeded in rounding the corners off a but, so I thought I should stop and ask for some help.
I am trying to replace the alternator, but in doing so I noticed there was no bushing on the upper bolt and no nut either ![]() so maybe my alternator is ok, but not generating voltage because its loose. so now I am trying to remove the lower bolt to get a bushing back up top. what do I do?

The lowest bolt threads into the bracket bolted to the engine. If it won't come all the way out, it's stripped.
Try and remove the bracket bolted to the engine, this is what I had to do to get mine out.

WHICH lower bolt? closest to the engine, or furthest from it?
are you trying to loosen it from the front of the alt, or the back? ALL BOLTS GET LOOSENED FROM THE BACK!

I use a 17mm 1/2" drive socket and ratchet. and LOTS of leverage. it helps to soak the other side with aerokroil too.

Question
Does the alternator move free on the lower pivot bolt?

enough to wiggle a bit, but I haven't been able to get the belts loose enough to slip them off. I can adjust the top nut all the way out and loden them up, but not write enough to slip them off, so I think the hinge isn't really free. I'm not sure if that answers your question.
who carries aerokroil...I have pb blaster, is it better for the job?

Ive used pblaster, and as far as aerosols go, it is probably the best... But the actual liquids in my experience work far better. More concentrated and more localized without the mess. Go to Home depot or any parts store and buy the bottle of liquid (not aerosol) liquid wrench. Works great. Apply to the specific interfaces of the seized parts you want to move.

I went through this nightmare recently after the alernator died on my '84 TD. The bottom bolt was seized in the two-inch hole in the aluminum bracket. Afraid of snapping the bolt, I used assorted prybars and a 2x4 to move the alternator as needed. First I removed the top adjuster bracket. Then I pried the alternator out as far as I could to allow room for my socket to unbolt the alternator bracket from the engine. Then I removed the alternator, with bracket, so I could work on that bolt someplace more convenient, with a breaker-bar, electric impact-gun, and liberal doses of oil, until (two hours later!) it finally came out. During this ordeal, the bolt head did get a bit rounded, but there still was enough left to be able to tighten it with a six-point socket. Plus it's now well lubed, so that it should be OK for awhile.
You migh try soaking it with some type of penetrating-oil for a day or two before attempting what I went through. Good Luck. Happy Motoring, Mark

Kroil isn't generally available for retail sale, but you can find it at Eastwood, Amazon, and Ebay. Or you can order it directly from Kano Labs if you give them a business name.

if you have a C.C. Dickson locally, it's on the shelf. also totaline parts carries it locally. nearly any HVAC supply shop should have it.
Johnstone supply etc... Trane service centers also.

what did you pay, and which size can did you get?
I was working on a jeep yesterday. large brother and neighbor using 24" 1/2" drive breaker bar and unable to remove stubborn nuts from steering linkage... I sprayed on the kroil, 2 minutes later, undid the bolts with ease.
