Park/Neutral Transmission Whine
Hey all,
Just got the wagon back from having transmission rebuilt. Mine was totally trashed according to builder. I got a donor from a friend and used his torque convertor and pump assembly (I know - I should have had the torque convertor rebuilt). Anyway, the transmission shifts perfectly, but there is a whine in park and neutral only. The fluid level looks good. When shifting from park to reverse, the whine goes away as the clutch pack is "energized". I've searched the forum, as well as the web, with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks

Take a look at the flex plate through the inspection hole towards the engine on the bottom of trans. Look for cracks.

Check my YouTube of the idle hunting I had on my car. Turn up the volume high and you can hear the woo sound that coincides with the idle.

hmmmm. wonder what it is. I always figured it was some kind of "throwout bearing" -ish thing that is whatever happens when the AT is unloaded.
I know on my MT BMW 318i, when I let the clutch out and the car is in neutral, I can hear something spin up. I guess it is the input shaft bearing or something. I assume that in the AT, when in neutral, only the TC can spin, nothing is shafted to it... so perhaps it creates more/different bearing loads then when in a drive gear and something else can spin???
