steering wheel phone mount with "wireless" charger

Previous to this I had the phone clipped onto an aluminum bracket (made from a yardstick) that's clipped onto the horn pad. I was using a phone charger in the cig lighter. This worked good on the highway but city driving making turns the cord would wrap around the steering wheel- a PITA.

I recently discovered that there is 12V + and ground at the steering wheel for the horn and relocated the charger to inside the steering wheel and made a different mount for the phone (on the side instead of in the center of the steering wheell)

With the steering wheel straight ahead, the bottom of the 2 spades is +12V, the top spade is ground and goes to the metal bracket that you push on to activate the horn. I soldered wires to the charger and the terminals and taped them up with electrical tape so they don't short out.

A LOT of effort to charge the phone. It is so prone to screw up.

Rubber horn pad back on with the charger pigtail sticking out under the horn pad. THe black plastic bracket (behind the pigtail) where the phone will clip on just slip in between the horn pad and held with a tie wrap on the steering wheel. The plastic came from the steering column jacket shroud that I broke when trying to remove it not knowing what the hell I was doing. At least I made good use of it.

I just have a little square of Velcro on my dash with a charger wire connected under the dash. That keeps the phone charged, I use Bluetooth to hear the phone, audio, and gps.

Phone clipped on and charging. No more charger cord wrapping around the steering wheel. I can answer the phone with the speakerphone or blue tooth, use google maps with quick/safe glance down while I drive and not worry about getting pulled over for holding the phone while driving which is $100 fine + points.

You are missing the point. See post #7. There is not much that can go wrong except a blown fuse. Took me 1/2 an hour. Is that a lot of effort? If it is it's worth it!

How would the blue tooth radio help with ease of answering the phone, looking at google maps or charging the phone?

Won't that void the warranty on the car? If the M-B engineers wanted you to have google maps, they would have put it in back in '83!

Check out Chad's setup - bluetooth microphone on top surface of steering column.

I wouldn't want to turn that wheel too much

Why wouldn't I want to turn the steering wheel??? My primary use is google maps traffic while I drive so I can re-route and avoid traffic. Having the phone in a easy to see handsfree location is paramount. Since the phone is on continuously while I drive, keeping it charged is a necessity. I do not do a lot of talking on the phone but if a call comes in, I'll put on the blue tooth headset and answer the call without taking my hands off the steering wheel. The "wireless" charger has eliminated a distractiion of the cord wrapping around the steering column in city driving, which should make it safer. Safety is important to me. I want to maintain my almost perfect driving record-no accidents, tickets/ points since 1972.
