What is this part and why is it ticking?

1981 300SD

Please see attached pics. When I try starting the car it will not turn over at

all. This part ...makes fairly loud ticking noise instead.

Any advice what this is and what is issue?

Thanks.

Austin

The relay has a strip fuse, remove and carefully inspect it for hairline cracks.

Measure voltage there too.

The clicking is an effect, not a cause. It occurs when voltage is low. Could be a bad connection. Have you load tested the battery?

It's what's under the two gold colored screws at the left side of the box in your first picture at the start of this thread.

I suggest taking a good close look at the battery terminals. Make sure they're clean, if not, take a wire battery brush to them. Make sure they're clamped down very tightly.

Unlikely connected to the relay, EXCEPT that both that, as well as the relay, are BOTH symptoms, in my opinion, of a "larger problem". They're both effects and neither is the cause. This has every sign of being a battery that can't support the electrical system, your protests about recent charging and battery newness notwithstanding. Might be a bad battery, might be a bad battery connection, and might even, I suppose, be a starter that has failed and is drawing an extreme amount of current. Maybe a failed alternator.... I'm just shotgunning at the moment but I think it's very likely to be an overall "not enough battery current" problem. Whatever the cause is.

Put a volt meter on the battery just as it sits out there and tell us what it reads. Then try to crank the car a time or two and read the voltage while you're attempting to crank.
