1985 300SD ABS light on at 250,000 kms

Hello all - first post,

Under heavy dry braking the ABS light always comes on.
Under light dry braking the ABS light sometimes comes on.
On snow or gravel the ABS works as it should.

Thought it may be sensor - but the ABS does work...
Thought it may be OVP - but the ABS does work...
Thought it may be electrical contacts - but it's not intermittent.
Thought it may be the ABS computer - as the fault can be repeated.

System can be reset by restarting engine and problem repeated.

Has anyone had this problem also and what was your fix?

Many thanks for any input.

Cheers

I would first try cleaning your wheel speed sensors. One on each of the front wheels and the 3rd on the rear diff.

I unscrewed the (?8mm?) bolt from the inside of the wheel and removed the sensor, put the car on jackstands and spayed brake cleaner in the hole while rotating the wheel, then clean the sensor tip well with brake cleaner. It is magnetic so it will have some gunk build up.

For the one on the rear diff, I just cleaned the sensor well and wiped out the hole with a lint free rag.

Other than that, follow your wheel speed sensor cable to their plugs under the hood and check connections. One of these should get going in the right direction.

Don't know the system, but I would check:

ABS Power supply & grounding, clean connections.
Charging system. I usually see the ABS light in a car come on when the alt or battery is going.
Brake fluid level- this drops under heavy braking, then refills.
Brake lines & hoses.
