Let's pick this eBay listing apart. 1987 300TD

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1987-MercedsBenz-300TD-Wagon-Excllent-cond-trade-me-/250801986290?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3a64f69af2

Its always fun to pick apart listings. This one is ripe for it.

"insists it only needs a head gasket" really means the #014 head is probably cracked;

170k ish miles on engine - could be . . .;

middle brake light out;

rear wiper no parking properly;

Bumper removed to tow, but for how far and at what speed? Perhaps a burnt transmission;

Rear badging in wrong position, probable indicates repaint - perhaps to go with the wiper and middle brake light issues;

"RUST FREE," but "a bit of paint bubbling;";

Leather, but actually MB-Tex;

Instrument cluster loose - lower mileage replacement?

What else?????

"in leiu of payment for a veggie oil conversion and carpentry job" ~ sounds like a hippie veggie type. Has this car seen the "jug of death"?

"Apparently only 500 brought to us in 87" ~ Apparently he is full of ***** !!

"dark wood veneer." ~ with splits & cracks

"It came from california last." ~ & probably the rust belt before that !!

"Theres is 222k on the body but my friend put in a newer engine about two years ago and told me it was 170k ish when installed" ~ how come the motor died at 170k?

"He insisted it needs the head gasket replaced and thats it but with automobiles one can never tell," ~ Oh but you can, how come the motor has died after just 50k in the car. Sounds about right for a 'death by jug'.

"an ametuer like me" ~ Who does veggie conversions? Nothing "ametuer" about him! What we see is veiled dis-closers of problems. Quite cunning.

"He aslo insisted everything else on the car is working and good in fact laughed at me when i even asked but i havent driven it personally." ~ In other words I am not admitting anything about the car. Its a total "black box"

" Various small pieces of interior and exterior trim have popped off but are present" ~ when exterior trim "pops off" it is lost on the side of the road. More likely they havent been put back on yet following a second rate paint job to cover up the rust.

"there is also a bit of paint bubbling allong the lower edge of rear windows, dime sized here and there and very minor." ~ "dime sized" is not minor. probably could poke the key through the panel. When you get rust there its usually come from the inside because water is leaking in there from other damage & condenses up at the top & so rusts up there.

"Matching aftermarket rubber mats" ~ to cover the rotted carpet.

"Comes with a complete set of W123 rims. Think permanently mounted winter tires" ~ W123 rims are only 14". "permanently mounted" cant they get them off because of corrosion?

Is that what you wanted? If it turns out to be a members car, I am sorry but we should expect more of our members !!

I'm not sure where to start.

"came from California last" The vin check shows it coming from NY in '96, it toured FL and GA, was finally titled in NM in '08, but never CA.

The wheels don't match, looks like the LR is an 8-hole. Rear bumper has been painted, something mounted to the roof, interior a mess, no heated seats nor leather as advertised, mileage ??, who has a car, replaces the engine and doesn't drive it for the next two years?, lots of pleads of ignorance or heresay about his friend telling him the miles or that everything works / deflecting liability, no mileage history at all except for the one in '08 showing 182,000 miles, ... if it were local I'd still look at it but I'm not sure why. Probably just feeling sorry for the car.

I'm pseudo blown away no one has posted a serious comment about how they think thats an $8,000 car.

But, I concur, a total pile of crap. It may need just an HG, plenty of high miled #14s being run hard on the daily avoid cracking up.

heh, I sent the seller a note about it's condition, quantities of the car sold in the US, and my estimate of it's current value.
I'll report what he replies...

nothing is more annoying than seeing photos of a car for sale where the snow has not even been removed from the top, trash not cleaned up from inside, and dash at least wiped down.

I'd bet a weeks pay that car has seen WVO through it

I disagree. My most annoying ad is one without a price.

Probably WVO and drain engine oil, directly in the fuel tank.
