I do not know what a ' bils' is..
but most shocks have an end with two flats on it..
so either a wrench of the right size.. or vise grips..squeezed there.... and then use an open ended wrench to get them off... a pain compared to being able to use a deep socket..but sometimes this happens... same problem sometimes with getting a tie rod end off....

The "trick" is a 7mm open end wrench, applied to the wrench flats on the rod.

Don't do like I did and used an Impact Wrench. Instead of the Nut coming off the Shaft/Rod unscrewed from inside of the Shock resulting in all of the Oil in the Shock coming out. Result; I ruined it.

Do the engine mounts have to be undone and the engine lifted to change the shocks? My mounts are only a few years old and look fine, but the shocks weren't changed at the time and the mount for one of them has separated. The service manual isn't clear on it, since it has a procedure for doing both at the same time.
