Exhaust difference diesel/gas

the rear exhaust box on the 1995 E300D I drive is not upto spec, the PO thought it would be cool to have a 3 inch tail pipe going sideways on it, due to that stupid pipe

1 it looks stupid
2 it makes the exhaust hang lower
3 it rubs the bumper
4 it rattles

is there any difference between the single outlet diesel box and the twin outlet gas one - I personally like the twin pipes. Just thought to ask beforehand

Presumably the gas one is smaller... the diesel needs a bigger exhaust, since it's moving more air most of the time.

BTW, the old 87 sedans had a twin outlet, for decoration I guess since most of the pipe is a big single.

The twin pipes are often to change the tone, just another form of muffler.

I don't know as that's not my area, but I read somewhere that there is a difference internally as the soot in diesel exhaust can be a problem in some muffler designs.

X2
I have never had success with a gasser muffler on a diesel. The diesel mufflers tend to be straight through perferated pipe with sound deadening material filling around it. Gasser mufflers are often full of baffles that coat in soot & block. The gas flow rate for a diesel is usually much higher than for a gasser.

Look in the Buy Parts tab above, click on Fast Lane, and your model etc... type in the search box. W0133-1717560 and a rear Eberspaecher muffler will appear. $211.33. (no picture)
