Diesel hard to start when HOT??/
Hey folks,
I have a 98 e300D and Ive noticed over the last few weeks that if I run the car home from work 40miles and stop at the store it will NOT restart with out some MAJOR effort. Its getting plenty of gas. If I crank it too much or for too long I can see th IP starting to heat up.... If I wait about 10-15 mins It will start with some coaxing.. Any ideas? In the mornings when it is cold it will start right up... after work it will start right up... But dont stop anywhere on the way home... |

If it has a vacuum shut off valve, pull the vacuum line next time it won't start and see if it starts. If it does, the ignition switch is not bleeding the vacuum off the shut off valve.

I think his 98 e300D has Hydraulic Valve Lifters.
Kerry's idea seems like a good one. I was thinking there something wrong with what ever gives the EGR Vacuum. The EGR should not be on during starting. Too much Crankcase Pressure will push the Vacuum Shutoff into the Shutoff direction. Try Starting with the Oill Fill Cap loose. If it works you may need to clean out your crakcase vent system. I doubt if this is the case but trouble Starting when it is hot is a symptom of a worn out Elements in the Fuel Injection Pump.

That car does not have a vacuum shut-off. It is an electrical device. It should be suspected.
If the shut-off valve on the side of the IP is not bad, the problem could lie in the K40 relay module, or the ignition switch. Or, maybe it leaks more air into the lines when it's hot. You could see that. A 2" bubble before the pre-filter when the engine is stopped is not a cause for alarm. |

also, if it's been run on WVO the IP's are known to be difficult to start when hot.
a 98 is more likely electronic though... unless it's not CRANKING when it's hot. then it's likely a starter issue.
