1995 E300D cruise control
This morning I used the cruise control and set it at 45 mph the
motor suddenly went to wide open and I had to use the brakes to slow it down. the cruise control would not de-energize so I used the brakes to slow down and turn off the ignition. I restarted the engine and it went into high idle (4000 rpm immediately) I shut down the engine and got out and took the #5 fuse out as it said the cruise control and other electrical things. I got back in the car and it would not start until I replaced the #5 fuse. When I restarted the car the engine started to go wide open but suddenly the cruse control broke contact and engine started running normal again. 1. Will the engine run wide open every time I try to use the cruise from now on or was it just a "short" that caused it. 2. Another question "where is the cruise control located on the engine?" and if this happens again where can I disconnect the cruise control? |

The cruise control system is behind the injection pump - its connected by a mechanical lever - I cant comment where the electrical brain box is though.
Ive had mine stick to 2000 rpm due to that sticking connection - once I lubed it - the fault never showed again. |

Tom Cruise Crontrol brain
The cruise control box is to the left side of the steering column in the bottom of the dash. It's silver, there is an electrical component of some name plugged into it, and one wiring plug. Remove the plug and two mounting screws, and out it comes.

I would suspect a sticking linkage issue more than an electrical issue. I had that exact thing happen on my '95. It was ONE sticking ball cup to the cruise, but it could be one on cruise, injection pump or resonance flap/egr going across valve cover.....

I've had the sticking throttle issue on both of my E300's and it had nothing to do with the cruise control. I will say that the only time it did it was at the first run of the day. In other works once things got heated up under the hood it would not stick anymore. You are going to need to disassemble the mechanical throttle linkage and clean and lube the connecting points. When the cruise control goes bad it typically just quits working and needs the electronic control module rebuilt.

The easiest way to disconnect the cruise control is to unplug the cable that runs from the actuator. It plugs in on the driver's side of the engine compartment....on my 124 (a 91 300D) it's about six inches in front of the fire wall.
And call Peter at GDL...he's a master at diagnosing cruise symptoms. http://gdl-online.com/begin.html

But definitely lube all the linkage first....cheap and easy.
