URGENT: 81 240d Manual - Neutral position help!
I'm working my parent's 81 240d and I removed the shifter for rebuild but need to leave the tranny in neutral position while I take the shifter home to work on.
There are no lock holes on the shift levers so I'm at a loss determining the correct position of all three. Is vertical on each of them the neutral position? |

Center lever R-N Rear lever !-N-2 For neutral all levers parallel @ one-o-clock. |
This is the newer Getrag 4-spd with the levers pointing down. With the end of the lever (where it connect to rods) in mind, could that also be considered 7 o'clock?

I seem to remember in the 80's the GM auto transmissions used top gear meshed with 1st to create a reverse... a really weak reverse IIRC... let to the failure of a lot of reverse/3rd gear clutches/bands... the old th350 I think...

Beagle might be thinking of the trans brakes drag racers sometimes use. They tend to use some kind of hydraulic modification to lock the trans in forward and reverse simultaneously while the driver holds down a button. The idea is to be able to go to wide open throttle without the car moving, then let go of the button when the light turns green for an instant full-throttle launch.
You wouldn't use this for a park brake because the hydraulic pressure won't stay up once the engine is off. |
Hmm.
the limited use I've had with race cars always used a hydraulic line lock... a solenoid that locked the brake fluid after you pumped up the pedal... hit the button, and whoosh off you go. Quote:
