URGENT: 81 240d Manual - Neutral position help!

I'm working my parent's 81 240d and I removed the shifter for rebuild but need to leave the tranny in neutral position while I take the shifter home to work on.

There are no lock holes on the shift levers so I'm at a loss determining the correct position of all three. Is vertical on each of them the neutral position?

Front lever 3-N-4
Center lever R-N
Rear lever !-N-2

For neutral all levers parallel @ one-o-clock.

This is the newer Getrag 4-spd with the levers pointing down. With the end of the lever (where it connect to rods) in mind, could that also be considered 7 o'clock?

Yes, that box has the reverse lever down. all levers parallel - 7 O'clock/1 O'clock.

Jack up the rear of the car and when the wheels turn your in neutral.

Here I was trying to make this hard... Stevo = K.I.S.S.

Thanks!

So what happens if you shift multiple levers into gear? Is it even possible?

Yes you can shift all levers into gear - locks up the transmission solid! That is how "P" locks an A/T tranny - engages 1st and 3rd gear together.

Technically, thats not supposed to be possible internally under normal circumstances with the cast bell getrags. There are detent-interlock mechanisms inside the transmission to prevent both arm being in gear at the same time. However, if you have some kind of internal damage, or crack in the mechanism, a lot of which depends on cast aluminum, you could theoretically do this, but it would be extremely difficult

Actually P works by engaging a small pawl onto a bit of the output shaft.

this needs to be verified? Im pretty sure that the front two levers control 3-4 and 1-2, while the rear most lever which faces up controls only reverse, at least on the cast aluminum getrags.

Is it different on the iron boxes?

I seem to remember in the 80's the GM auto transmissions used top gear meshed with 1st to create a reverse... a really weak reverse IIRC... let to the failure of a lot of reverse/3rd gear clutches/bands... the old th350 I think...

Beagle might be thinking of the trans brakes drag racers sometimes use. They tend to use some kind of hydraulic modification to lock the trans in forward and reverse simultaneously while the driver holds down a button. The idea is to be able to go to wide open throttle without the car moving, then let go of the button when the light turns green for an instant full-throttle launch.

You wouldn't use this for a park brake because the hydraulic pressure won't stay up once the engine is off.

Hmm.
the limited use I've had with race cars always used a hydraulic line lock... a solenoid that locked the brake fluid after you pumped up the pedal...
hit the button, and whoosh off you go.
