190D Glow plug question. Keeps burning fusable link?
I have a 1985 190D. my glow plug relay was only powering up 2 glow plugs. I pulled out the relay and opened it up. inside was burned. I did not have another 4cyl relay, so I took the relay from my 300d and plugged it in. it worked great 1 time, then it burned the fuseable link, I change the link and it burned it again as soon as I turned the key on. what would cause it to keep burning the fuseable link out?
thanks. |

Make sure harness from GP relay to the GP's is not damaged.

Too much current of course. Perhaps a shorted glow plug or feed wire abraided and contacting ground.
Some of the newer glow plug circuits may also draw more current so you should check on the fuse link value on both those cars. You do have the old controller to check it's link? Start by reading all the ohm values on the four current glow plugs. |

It's working!
Upon closer inspection, #3 glow plug wire was pressing up against the intake manifold, causing a direct short. Repositioned the wire, changed the fuseable link, with a 50a, thats all I had and I dont know what it requires, but its working. Thanks! |

I believe all of the Glow Plug Relays since sometime in the 1070s use an 80amp Fuse.
Eaception: some of the Glow Plug Relays have a circuit breaker instead of a Fuse.
