Slightly tangential, but did your Nissens radiator come with a metal reinforced water neck? I recently purchased one for my 602 and was distressed to see no metal reinforcement like that found in the Behr it was replacing.

Do you think the 11 blade fan moves more air than the 9 blade one?

Fan R&R is a breeze if you've already had it out once before, and didn't over-tighten the center bolt. I've never encountered stripped water pump threads, but I have run into previous mechanics who torqued the bolt to about a thousand lb-ft, which makes removal interesting. It just needs to be snug when installing. I wouldn't cut the shroud at all, it's there for a reason, and there's really no need to chop it up just to make it easier to remove.

Nissens do not have the metal reinforced necks. It's worth paying the $20 extra for a Behr, IMO. Sorry to hear you didn't know that before buying. Also, on the 87 300D, the Nissens may require cutting some of the plastic radiator tank (on the left / driver side) to make it fit. The Behr doesn't need this.

Yeah, I feel pretty stoopid for not being aware of that little detail.

That's a thought - cut the shroud in half horizontally through the fan axis. I wonder if it's rigid enough to still function as a shroud.

[edit] Use vampire clips like around the cowl drain channels to keep the shroud rim intact while in place.

Whunter's opinion is the Nissens radiator is a MUCH higher quality and cooling design than the Bher... Bher is just a slight modification from original, Nissens is a complete redesign of the cooling circuit and according to Whunter, it's the better choice.

He's entitled to his opinion, as is anyone else, but I disagree that the Nissens is better in any way than the Behr. The fact that the Nissens for 124.1x3 chassis requires cutting of the tank is inexcusable, IMO. The Nissens doesn't appear to last any longer than the Behr (the opposite may be true, but I don't have enough data from different cars to make that claim yet).

Is it a multipass radiator with compartmentalised radiator tanks.

fit may be an issue, but perhaps the cooling is better. and we all know the 124 diesel needs as much cooling room as can be made!

Cutting of the tank vs drilling the transmission cooler mounting holes for a Behr. I'm not sure why either of them aren't bolt on.

Oh wait... I see one in there, though it looks like it's a bit loose judging from how far out its unscrewed. Anyhow, check if the other 2 are still there.

Can a loose fan generate enough vibration to break itself apart? At speed I would think so... the fracture points all coincide with the screw holes I noticed.
However, in my case, fan reached radiator and then broke. Made the same scar on Bonnet! Funny, but dangerous. Actually, fan twists with high revs.
