Vacuum Shut off device & pics

Today I replaced the vacuum shut off device (VSOD).
I read several stories about run away engines and a great article on Diesel Giant. I followed their method.
I removed the vacuum dump valve, two hex bolts and a throttle linkage to pry off. Next came four slotted machine screws on the ALD plate. The pic shows the plate rotated 90º CCW and moved a bit to the front. Now there is a straight in view to the VSOD hook position. Do this before removing the old piece.

With the MidiVac hooked up pump a bit to shorten the assembly for easy placement into the IP body. Same for removing the old one. Now you can see where the hook is going for sure.

The pic below shows the hook in the correct position forward of the bar. When fully extended the hook will be an inch a head of the bar. That is the distance the bar needs to travel for full throttle. You can see that if the hook was to the rear of the bar with no vacuum it would push the bar forward for full throttle,a screamer.

Below is the hook pulled all the way in, under vacuum. The shut off position. keep the vacuum on when placing the for collar and four bolts, Much easier.

Now you can start your engine and know it won't run away and will shut off properly. Tools: 1/4 drive 10mm short socket. Big screw driver, with square shank. Remember there are two washers on the banjo fitting bolt to the ALD. This should be a two hour job give or take.

Nice one.

It looks a bit different on my car I think - I'll have to check that.

What sort of pump have you got?

If there were a sticky for FAQ and common DIY jobs, this would belong there, IMHO. Thanks for the write-up, I will using this before very long.
